EB- Are you using the large diameter or narrow diameter pipe for the mod?
I think this makes a diff in tone / sound quality. I've heard a set of hacked cans that sounded great, and another that sounded pretty bad. Unfortunately I didn't get to see what the diffs were betwen the two. Look forward to the results.

i had to go to a specialty exhaust shop to buy a 2.25" stainless u tube (turns out, narrow radius mandrel in stainless is not something usually stocked by muffler shops) expensive and not used much i guess. they had one in 2.5" left over from a lambo job they recently did.. cost the dude $680 in mandrel bend u tubes alone!

i'm also having them remove the welded cap vs. cutting the center out to allow for proper outflow.

..off the the shop i'll post results later today. i'm cautiously optomisitic from all of the research i have done.

Oem 3.6 mufflers. I'm holding onto the ghl's in case nothing else works out for me as well (or I run out of money)

Cool, good luck with the mod. Curious, did you not like the GHL's? I would think they gave you some added hp/tq, at least a bit?

Typically the stock can mod is a sound-only upgrade, no added performance benefits from what I have always read in the forums, plus the stock cans are heavier than most aftermarket mufflers.
The upside is an OEM-like feeling inside the cabin. Comparatively, many of the aftermarket muffers will introduce a bit of vibration in the cabin as none of them use a flex joint like the stock cans. I can say this with certainty on the ones I have personally used (Agency, Racing Dynamics) with exception of AH (uses a flex joint, totally smooth).

Looking forward to your results- post some vid if possible.

i liked the ghl's, but am thirsty for more sound. the sound they produce is how the car should come from the factory imho. great when you get on it, quiet as stock when just cruising. (which is exactly what i wanted at first) i may end up going back to them if i cant find what i want.. moderate growl at idle, cruise, wot without resonance/drone without breaking the bank.

i'm only trying to gain sound, not performance as i believe any increased hp/torque is so minimal it is something perveived, not felt. i base this opinion on two things:

1. my brother said so. he is an instructor at the nations largest automotive mechanic school with over 10 years of experience working on exotic cars including ferrrari, etc.), has built his own vintage race cars from top to bottom and raced scca for several years, has worked with current nascar, drift series, etc., etc. (ie. knows a hell of a lot more than me)

2. accelleration 101: as a teen i had a 1986 fiero gt 6cyl automatic. had a pretty mean growl to it back in the day. i thought it was pretty fast. i got a 1991 honda crx 5 spd with 16v stock engine. when i raced my buddy, the crx blew the doors off the mean sounding fiero. that is when i learned about sound of a car vs. weight, etc. i was dissapointed for a minute, but realized the crx was my new car, so got happy quick.

with most things, i think a 1-3% increase or decrease in something would be hard to feel.

then there is the issue of the engine being computer controlled right? so even if you have a high flow intake/headers/cats/and exhaust, what is the computer telling the engine to do? i certainly don't know! i just want my car to sound like the sports car it is! even if it means dropping a couple grand into a pse or tubi.

we'll see how it goes today..

Totally, I have always embaced that same thinking and it has been pretty much fact until I started running the AH pipes.
I've done a lot of dyno tests with my 996, and just started doing dyo tests with the 997. No matter how you slice it, the AH pipes make noticeable and verifiable power on my cars. Check out my other forum threads and the dyno charts- I've been trying to openly document everything.
I was really looking for feedback on the results from other experienced members. To me it seems like a lot of gain for a simple muffler swap, but it's legit.

Looks like your mod came out nice- been driving on them yet?

-but again I ask (for like the 4th time now) how you can express such a negative opinion and comparison on an exhaust you have never heard in person or driven with? Your only experience with them is trying to install a set and not being able to complete the install.
That's really the main and only point of what i'm calling your BS on.. how are you forming your opinion of sound quality, tone, resonance, performance etc? -you can't seem to answer this one thing truthfully because you know I've busted you in a lie.

If you had actually used them 1st-hand and offered a poor opinion based on your experience then so what- That's legit, solid input. Fabricating information and expecting others to believe it is not.

Sounds like you're calling me a liar.... ???? Are you?

I've heard these in person and can show you photos of them here in my shop and on the car. I even have a video of one of the cars driving off from the shop. TELL ME FIRST, IF I PROOVE YOU WRONG THAT YOU WILL STOP PROMOTING THESE DRONES ON THE FORUM.... "DEAL?"

GHL exhaust are of a high quality in design, "you're 100%" correct. They will only open up when given a good amount of pedel action. Perfect for NOT becoming the neighborhood enemy #1.

+1 on the GHL, you can't go wrong.....

Lot's of guys I know have this mod, it's a pretty decent mod considering the limited amount of $$$$ involved. Can't be bad when you consider that it was Porsche design on the first 996 models (before the PSE was available).

Post it up, please. I love that stuff.

To review, your "expert seasoned advice" is based on.... Hmm, one possible "sketchy" video of a car driving off (Maybe GTJohns pcar?) and a couple possible cell phone photos of a botched install. Yeah sounds to me like I just know nothing compared to your massive "experience" with them. How silly of me!

Put my money where my mouth is? Dude you are a couple slices short of a sandwich!! Let's see.. documenting info / experience on the forums from the time I first found them through the whole span of use on my 996 and 997, to using them on two different pcars, to driving a couple thousand miles on them and reporting results, not to mention multiple dyno tests posted / videos posted / pics posted. No dice with you eh? That's just not "the standard" by your odd limited performance car experience eh?

-And NOW you say I have not used a decent exhaust to compare to. So you are insulting Dan's business with Vivid Racing and Agency Power, which I mention a lot as having used previously??? Dude do you ever stop with your self-bullsh!t? Nice job insulting a great 6speed sponsor buddy! I guess you know more than him too eh?

-And don't forget the other forum members who own AH pipes and have posted positive things about them hot shot. So go on and tell everyone how they are wrong, how you are right, and how probably none of them have owned anything decent to compare to, blah blah blah...Oh mighty parts general manager non mechanic guy. You truly are a wise old sage.
