'02 also has better cooling (more airflow thru the radiators), stiffer chassis (my '99 had lots of squeeks), better quality interior materials, looks less like a Boxster, 3.6 motor with more hp & torque (vs the 3.4 of earlier 996's), etc, etc

If I was looking to buy a 996, I wouldn't buy the '99-'01 unless it was all I could afford. I've owned both and the '02-'04's are much improved.

I loved my '99 too, but the revised version ('02 on) is better. If you're shopping for one and it's in your budget, get it.
