3 yrs ago i was buying a car specifically for my commute.

totally seriously, i had it narrowed down to an STi, a 996TT, and a murcielago.

kind of funny where i ended up.

STi's are great. i love em. just a different car than a 996 though. i currently have a regular wrx, and while it's no STi, it does have a few power mods and i enjoy beating the crap out of it.

i never even liked porsches that much til i owned one. and i dont even think i appreciated it til i put a ton of miles on it and really spent time with it.

spend more time driving the 996 and other 996's if you can. at some point it may make more sense to you.

once you understand it, there really isnt a comparison.

oh i think you misunderstood me.

my comment wasn't directed at you at all. it was directed to the OP. i quoted you, cuz u thought an sti-996 comparison is a strange thing.

i agree with you, i dont think there is a comparison. totally different cars.

i was just trying to say that awhile ago, i tried to make same comparison, and i came to realize, they aren't really all that comparable.

too soon to tell about the murc. i've only been able to put a couple hundred of miles on it so far. i am certain i dont fully understand it yet.

I primarliy wanted to confirm that the different feel of the driving experience between the two cars was similar to what other people had felt. Wanted to make sure that the 996 I test drove felt how it should. Im definatley going to try and test drive a few more cars. When I find the right one things will be fantastic.

If anyone took my original question as a knock to the Porsche please dont, its a great car just felt different to actually drive it than how I imagined it would.

yeah, the different suspensions you will find on used 996's will also obviously have vastly different feels. and the mk1 cars feel different than the mk2 cars to me. the clutches feel different as well as the self-centering nature of the steering.

when i first test drove the mk1, after only driving mk2's, i thought there was something wrong with the clutch. it bothered me so much i made the salesgirl grab another mk1 for me to drive. it felt exactly the same and again very different than the mk2's i had driven. so i figured it was normal and i bought the car. now the mk2's feel weird to me.

don't forget, if you like the basics of the car you are looking at, but it doesnt handle as well as you think it should, you can always change things.

coilovers, sway bars, a lwfw, will have a huge impact on feel. you can turn the 996 into a more comfortable gt car, or a sick track star.

Also the STi has closer gearing, which makes it accelerates faster.

are you talking about 0-60? throttle response? Is a stock STI really faster 0-60 than 996 3.6?

the link doesn't work, try using the hyperlink tool in the top menu bar, it looks like a globe with a chain link over it, that way you links will post correctly.
