aftermarket exhaust drone

Well I put the the afterhours exhaust on my 2000 C2 tip and the unit is really slick. Weight is probably half that of the stock unit. The sounds are fantastic except for a significant drone at 2200 to 2800 RPM. Sometimes it is almost painful to my ears. I am wondering if other exhausts make this sound, the stock one doesn't. I know there is a huge difference in weight between the two. Has anyone tried FisterD's mod where he connects the inlet and outlet? Does that one drone? I like most of the sounds coming out of this one but since this is a daily driver it may be too much for me. Glad I didn't buy the muffler bypass pipes! There may be an afterhours exhaust system up for sale soon.

There is zero drone on my previous GHL exhaust and my PSE. Also I have been in a car with fabspeed once and no drone there too.

I tried the DFister mod on a set of 99 6spd mufflers on my 01 Tip. The sound was much improved (though not as loud as most aftermarket exhausts) with no drone whatsoever at any speed or RPM. However, there was an unwanted vibration in the cabin when the car was stopped and in gear (Drive or Reverese) but no vibration while in Park, Neutral or when car is moving. I think the problem is that the 99-01 6spd mufflers were slightly different than the Tip mufflers. The Tip mufflers have the accordion style inlet (like the 02+ mufflers); the 6spd mufflers didn't. DFister was extremely helpful and refunded my money for the mod and took the modded mufflers off my hands.

Because of my experience with the modded mufflers, I've been hesitant to put a set of aftermarket mufflers on my Tiptronic car (though I badly crave for more sound) for fear of the vibration while the car is stopped at a light. So I'm very curious to know: when you are parked at a stop light with the car in gear, can you feel any additional vibration in the cabin with the afterhour exhaust installed?

AWE has this. Sounds like resonance of some sort. Similar RPM range.

The only negative to this AHours exhaust is the Drone. I can deal with it - my wife can not. You can forget about any conversation or a cell phone when this is going on.....just get above 2800rpm

Mine is not that bad at 2800RPM. The only time I get a lot of drone is higher gears below 2500RPM & I can still use the mobile phone.

FisterD's mod doesn't have any drone. at all. but the sound is not that loud. I can't believe people need the switch with PSE!!!!!

Thanks for the input all. John, the Afterhours exhaust has a flex tube on the inlet that I believe accomplishes the same thing as the accordion on the stock system. My car has no vibration in gear. I was going to purchase Fister's exhaust but when he sent a picture of it I noticed that it did not have the accordion. Thus I passed on it. I have been driving the car in manual mode to keep it out of the high gear\low rpm range. My mileage went from 22 mpg to 19. I wouldn't be able to talk on the cell phone when running at those RPMs but once above that not an issue at all. Sounds great all other times though.

Fister mod has the accordion.... Just have to make sure you order the correct year for your car. Love mine. Just wish was louder. Mine is stage 1 I guess. same as PSE but without the stupid valve/switch

Chuck, have you considered sending your stock Tip mufflers (w/accordion) to Fister for the mod? I think you'll be happy as there is no drone but if you want a loud exhaust you'll be disappointed. Fister's mod works better on the 02+ 3.6L mufflers (which all have accordion) for our 3.4L cars if you want louder sound. I've been trying to find a cheap set of 02+ 3.6L stock mufflers with no luck. My other options are to mod my current Tip 3.4L mufflers (w/accordion) or find a set of aftermarket mufflers with the accordion/flex tube that won't cause the vibration. I also don't like the drone. I had a set of Fabspeeds on my old 99 C2 6spd which had great sound but also had drone.

Joel, what year is your car and do you know what year are the modded mufflers which you bought (from 3.4L or 3.6L car)?

I use the switch all the time.

Otherwise, I would have gone with a light weight exhaust such as fabspeed or stuck with my GHL

John, my exhaust does have the accordion. It is my understanding that the later '02 exhaust can have the modification like PSE (tube running from muffler case to exhaust outlet). Pressure allows bypass of some of the muffler internals. The Stage II that Darin was going to sell me was a direct connection between the inlet and outlet tubes outside the muffler case.

Yes I am considering sending my stock mufflers to Darin. I am also considering doing the job myself. I have a mig welder and just need to get the right gas and wire to weld stainless steel. I think Darin does it with a TIG which provides a nicer weld but both will give the same result.
