Oil change once a year regardless of miles???
Oil change once a year regardless of miles???
So I've got 27k on my '99 and put probably 1000 - 2000 miles a year on it, my dealer calls me the other day and asks if I want to schedule an oil change. I told him it was about 1000k miles since my last one and he says it doesn't matter, I should change it every year or every 3k miles.
True or False?

I have never seen hard data to support it, but the two most credible arguments seem to be:
- when you do drive, the oil picks up chemicals that will harm the interior of the engine if left indefinitely, and,
- if you only drive it occasionally, it's possible that the engine never warms up enough to drive out all moisture, so changing the oil can help reduce the moisture in the engine & reduce corrosion.
I've also heard people argure that when oil sits, it absorbs damaging moisture....which makes no sense to me.
Probably just as important as the oil change is to drive the car for an hour or more each time you do use it....including some strong acceleration & highway miles to really get the engine up to temp & evaporate moisture & raw fuel that collect in the crankcase when the engine is running, but below full operating temp.

For 2001-2005, it's every 12k miles or every 2 years. Personally, I'd do 12k miles or every year.

every year
If you are only driving the car 1000 to 5000 miles per year I would make an annual trip to the dealership to have the oil changed at least one time per year. If you drive the car more frequently, 6000 miles would be my max on one oile change. With oil being the life blood of the engine to prevent wear it is better to be safe than sorry.
As others above have already said, I'd make sure I blow it out each of the few times I actually drove it -- keep it in a lower gear and run 6500-7000 RPM for 5 minutes. If you still have the original tires they can't be too hot, either.
Changing depends on more than miles/time... type of driving, environmental conditions, mods, type of oil. I suggest you check out bob the oil guy or do a search on Doug Hillary for someone with extensive testing of oils in his Porsche.
