Took my car into the shop today and they gave me a new Cayman S for a loaner. Except for the way over the top road noise, it's quite a ride. Handling is outstanding, gotta love that mid-engine geometry. I had a Boxster S when they first came out and this puts it to shame in power.

All in all, it was a pleasant surprise. Wouldn't want one, but a nice ride none the less.

Mid engine is the future.... one day the rear engine philosophy will reach its limits...

 

I took out a new 2008 Cayman S for a test ride a couple of months ago and remarked to the salesman on the very noisy cabin. There was a lot of tire noise as well as engine. I was quite surprised. It was a hoot to drive though.

I think the noise is a combination of factors. That big window acts like a bass drum and sets up some resonance and not enough sound deadening material allows road/tire noise in. I bet some "road kill" or other material would fix it in a heartbeat. Shame Porsche allowed it out this way.

Porsche is fighting it till the end though... just read that the new GT3 has dynamic motor mounts... brilliant!
