After about 8 months of using the 997 shifter (used to have the stock 996) I say it's money well spent.

Did this mod on 01 C2 when I first got the car in January. Much shorter throws and more precise than the stock set up but still stiff. Changed my fluid to Redline MT 75w90 and wow much smoother shifting especially cold, almost like the shift action of my 335i. Don't know if it was just fresh fluid or if the redline is better than the factory fill but I recommend the 997 shifter and Redline to all.

DIY. Very easy, search for B&M short shifter install on Rennech, there is a step by step with pics that guides you through. GL

Same here, pretty easy DIY with B&M instructions, just be VERY careful of sharp edges on the center console scratching/cutting any rubberized paint or leather. I use copious amounts of blue painters tape to protect the areas. I had installed the B&M, and while I loved the throws, it was just way too notchy for around town driving, especially 1st. Would be ideal for the track, though, I'd think. I greatly prefer the 997 shifter linkage for everyday use.
