solenoid and all related hardware. neccessary to remove camshafts left side
to perform operation..
rd tested car afterwards ok
The following was noted radio and cd changer comunication problems
interminent. Also radio buttons are deterieting.

we'll he suggested that i do it now since he was already in there and he had to do some work on the camshafts and engine, so i went ahead with it. was it wrong to get it done at 22k?? oh i forgot to mention it included parts and labor on the price he charged me.
on My 00 996 my 30k svc (Done @ Champion) was no more then $450...the cam stuff is common my 00 had several of those issues and I was under warranty so I can not comment but I know it is a 6hr job...plus parts
Not wrong, maybe slightly premature. However, I can see his point if he's already doing some major work. My dealer quoted me about 500$ for 30K svc. Is that about what everybody else is seeing?

This past week I had a 15k service performed on my '99 996. It only has 7,800 miles (but THAT is about to change rapidly). I paid almost $2,000. $650 (including sales tax and a $47 wiper blade assembly) was for the actual 15k service. $330 was for the new spare key I needed. The rest was to reseal the cam covers because the previous owner did not drive the car enough and the seals dried and cracked just as advertised by the factory. I fully expected this problem when I purchased (STOLE!) this car from the first owner (He originally bought the car in Hawaii - where ya gonna go? - and lived a block from his office so he walked rather than drive - car sat mostly in his garage). My fourth 996, so I new what to expect.
Since you only resealed ONE cam cover, the $1495 seems about right. I expect my ACTUAL 15k service to be just a few short months away on this car and to pay the $650 quoted again for that service. Just makes good sense to me to spend your money where it counts. I have always had my Porsches serviced at Brumos in Jacksonville, and I have ALWAYS been treated very well there (I am a member of the Brumos Frequent Buyer Club although this car was not purchased from them this time - still they treat me very very well). I believe it is better to spend wisely up front and drive away with a 2 year warrenty on parts and labor, than to trust myself to it. And I don't have the "Hammer" to trouble shoot the car for bugs.
This is just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Is that really worth $400? For that matter is an oil change and pollen filter change worth $550?
It is beyond me why someone would pay that much for something that can be done in 2 hours max for under $100 in fluids and filters.
The excuse that your warranty will be voided if a dealer does not do this routine maintenance is right up there with getting pregnant from sitting on a public toilet seat.
Just think what you could have done with that $800 you saved if you changed your own oil and filters.
OE,
I agree completely with you about everything you said. I wish I had some sort of access to a lift. I don't even have a garage (long story - tell you why some other time). I chose to let the dealer do it because, along with the oil and filters, came an over all inspection that revealed the leaking cam covers (I would have just assumed it was normal), a repair that was way beyond my personal mechanical capabilities. I also got a free rental car while my daily driver was in the shop. I also got a two year warranty on parts and labor. I also have a very high hourly rate on my professional time. About 4 times the rate as the Porsche dealer service department.
I learned long ago that I unfortunately do not have that magic genetic gift that some possess when it comes to instinctive car repairs. I have been a Porsche freak and tinkerer since the mid-'60's. The last oil change I attempted was about 14 years ago on my '89 Porsche 911 Targa, and I damn near had to have it towed to the dealer when I couldn't get the oil filter loose, and crushed it and tore it open, even with the proper wrench. Nor do I have the time and place to do it. Let's see... spend $50k to build a garage vs spend a few bucks extra for someone else to do it right the first time...
Yes, it is a bit embarassing for a life long car guy (and so new to this board) to admit that I don't have what it takes in the garage. But I DO know who has "it", and I'm willing to pay him whatever he asks, for the piece of mind knowing it was done right and I didn't forget something important.
P.S. I'm not under any factory warranty on my '99 Carrera, and the warranty on my '01 Carrera is about to end. That won't keep me away from the dealership.
PPS Anybody with a Cabriolet or Boxster should never pay ANY money to change the pollen filter in their Porsche. Just remove it. Permanently. It is an OPEN CAR, for chrissakes! And you'll be driving with the top down during the times of the year when airborne pollen is at its worst.
Just my opinion. I could be wrong.
