Have a 2001 996 Cab and it's doing a similar thing. But mine just keeps cycling to lock, then unlock, then tries to lock again, and never stops. the red dask light won't go out, so it never lets my rear windows up
anyone ever seen this and had it repaired?
not excited about having a dealer stumble around billing me while they try to figure it out and just replace everything until it works.

That happened to me, and looking closely I found out that the plastic end of the hook was broken, missing a small piece of plastic and showing the underneath metal. What happens then, is that the hook does not push the latch all the way and it keeps cycling. I was lucky and found the broken piece as it just broke so I glued it back at the end of the hook. Check that.
The hook must push the latch all the way up... if missing the last piece of the hook, it just does not reach high enough. You are aware that to make the rear windows go up with the top down, you can put your finger into the latch hole and press up, hold and then get the windows up. Basically, the finger mimics the hook.

if u wont ur rear windows to go up press the little metal latch inside, the plastic hook that goes around the metal hook is broken, u have the trick the car into thinking that the plastic hook is hitting it, u can also press it if u want the back windows up when the top is down
This is a photo of the hook in my car. Notice that I did place the broken piece in place, with a bit of epoxy. Without that piece, the hood would not lock and would spin, as it would not reach high enough when hooking onto the latch.
