Recently purchased or lookign to purchase a 996 C4S coupe? come in here :)
Good luck with the new baby. I just had my baby last year and realistically it doesn't make a great family car but I make it work. I just can't bring myself to get rid of it. Pros and cons are a dead lock 50/50. Once I get the baby in the back, its all smiles from then on out. =) I bought mine 3 years ago so I don't think it relates to you right now but I purchased mine for 56k with 24,500 miles with a 2 year extended warranty.
WOW!!! That sounds like a great deal for a nice car with reasonable miles.
From what I've seen mileage is a big factor in the price. They only made the 996 C4S for a few years, and it wasn't that long ago, so it doesn't seem like the year is as much of a factor as the mileage.
My local Porsche dealer has an '04 with 25K miles for $45K and an '05 with 35K for $50K. Looking at AutoTrader and eBay recently the good cars below 35K miles were running at a low of $38K, but I'm sure you could negotiate lower than that with a dealer and get even lower with a private party. But I think to get much below $36K you'd have to look at higher mileage. I used $38K as the market value for what I was looking for when I was shopping.
Three weeks ago I got an '03 C4S with 35K miles for $43K. I paid a bit more because the car was local, the right colors, nicely optioned to $90K, and had $28K in desirable mods - TechArt body kit, suspension, and wheels. Now is definitely a buyer's market and I know I could have bought another car cheaper, but I'm very happy with what I got and the price I paid.

Thanks for the reply! I am looking for a buyer like yourself. This car is a 100K+ window sticker - the most expensive C4S build I have ever seen. Color is great - Black on black. Full factory Aerokit with some other upgrades such as OEM SSK and the mileage is right (35k) + CPO warranty. I guess my number somewhere in the mid 40s would be a stellar deal for the buyer and myself. Thank you very much for the feedback.
Year: 2002
Miles: 42500
Bought: April 2008
Paid: $44k - private party with 2 year ext warranty
Options: Orient Red Metallic, Bose, Adv Tech, CD Changer, Alcantara headliner (now with Alcantara interior, B&M, Tubi Exhaust)

Good luck in your search - a lot of car for the money right now. At the time I was between a 996 C4S and a base 997, but now with 997S prices and 996 Turbo prices coming down into the mid 40's... they are looking very attractive

ExclusiveTT. You might be in the right range. A warranty does add some value and your car has low miles. I think 40k would be a good deal. If you are in no rush to sell then the low 40s could probably be achieved. Just have to find the right buyer.
Micro,
Thanks for that feedback. Where is the best place to advertise for a serious buyer like this? I have tried ebay, but it seems that everyone wants to steal cars on there. Any recommendations on how to find a buyer specifically for a C4S?

The Turbo is coming down in price which does kind of force the price of the C4S down a bit. I like the Turbo but I fear it might be a little much for a daily driver. (I have never driven a Turbo, just a guess.)
Put it up here on 6speed already!!!
eBay would totally suck for trying to actually sell your car. You're correct, people on there will not pay a fair price. HOWEVER, the eBay auction does get your car out there and noticed and may open up an opportunity to sell the car to a serious buyer outside of eBay. That's how I got the C4S that I just purchased - first saw it on eBay but it was for sale on consignment at a dealer. I was the high bidder but did not meet the reserve. I just worked out a direct deal over the phone after that.
Another option that I personally like is AutoTrader.com. There are just a ton of cars there and people will go there shopping. Someone might not buy your car from across the country, but if I was shopping on AutoTrader and saw you were close by I'd come take a look. I test drove a few cars off AutoTrader and even made a deal to buy one that fell through later. Again, it's a good way to at least get your car out there and in the public eye.

Kirk,
Thanks for the help!!! I will post it on autotrader. I dont believe I am permitted to post the car on 6speed because I am in the Automotive business and would need to become a sponsor to advertise.

I don't think vehicle weight would be related. Consider a 911 Turbo or Viper weigh more than a C4S and track junkies still get those cars corner-balanced.
When you sit in the drivers seat, your weight will alter the alignment and balance of a car. Also, if you have a height-adjustable suspension, you can adjust the height for balance.
In this context (stock suspension), I would say corner balancing is an alignment w/ GT3 RS specs w/ driver seat weight.

C4S downunder
Good morning all. The prices you are talking about seem utterly ridiculous (in a good way) for those of us who don't live in the US... I am seriously looking for a 03/04 C4S in Australia, and for something with about 40,000 km, in really strong condition (full history etc) and super clean, the current market place is about A$125,000. Before you start thinking that the AUD makes that cheap, it's currently about USD$0.78 - so nearly US$100,000!
Still feeling ripped off? I didn't think so. Enjoy your cars because they seem really cheap from here!
It's a function of being a smaller market, massive government taxes on new (premium) cars, and of course, the new price (about $275,000 depending on options...)
As a follow up, does anyone have an opinion on whether the PCM system is worth chasing? From various reports, I hear that the satnav is pretty useless and that I'd be better off just buying an aftermarket sat nav instead. Other than the Satnav, how is the integration with a mobile/cell phone, and what other functionality actually gets used? Oh, one final thing, none of the cars I have tested yet have had PSE, again, is it worth chasing (factory fit and dash switch etc) or is an aftermarket option a better bet?
