maybe it is the stock POS Stereo is burnt up from all that high fidelity tuneage

seriously my guess - either clutch, brakes or oil leak (hitting exhaust)

It is probably the normal smell after a bit of a thrash at speed given off by bits of road dirt and rubber hitting the hot exhaust after being thrown up by the rear wheels.

was it driven hard? Did you beat on it for 15 min or were you doing stop light to stop light stuff? When I get off the track after 10 laps, the car does not smell good...burning rubber, brakes and the engine heating up, it's a combination of those

I have an 01 with 39k miles when i got it, the previous owner didnt really drive it. After constantly driving it, I noticed a smell everytime I would get out of the car. The car has 55k miles (city driving) as we speak, and in those 15k miles, I've already replaced Valve cover gaskets & RMS, but not too long ago whenever I would get out of the car, I could still smell something... Its not as noticable as it was before, but there still is a smell. I took it to my Porsche independent shop to get looked at again , and they noticed another leak from the water pump. It's been approx. 600 miles after Water pump replacement, and there has been no smell so far. Hope this helps. Let me know what the outcome is.

Not to muddy the waters for you, but I noticed a burnt smell as well, narrowed it down to the tire rubber, seems to be a common issue with many but not all P 996 owners.

Other boards cover the same issue with similiar results, my previous owner had it for 30K miles and I will have it fore ever.

Seems that the proximity of the muffler towards the tire rubber (which possibly gets discharged from the tire???) causes this.
This scenario was described as being the culprint on renntech I believe.

Just came accross this tread, might be something to consider in looking for the source.

4 wheel alignment
I went to a local tire shop with a new alignment machine with flashing leds and cameras, computer printout of the before and after settings. With the tech, we went over each wheel adjustment camber and toe for the rear and caster, camber & toe for the front as well as thrust angle for the system. As far as bump steer, I was told by a reputable porsche guy that there was no adjustment for that, only camber and toe in the rear. Any way, the local shop took about an hour and a half, set the car up to my specs (factory basically but tighter on the tolerances) for $69.00 us. Any one with a new system like this should do it under 2 hours. The car runs quieter now and I do not smell burning rubber anymore.
