Are the 99-04 stock headers identical?

Is it the same part number?

I'm looking for a set of stock headers. I saw a couple on ebay but they're not from my model year.

Pretty sure they are different part numbers - depends on model number M96.01/02/04 different than M96.03 - my 2004 is M96.03 and X51 has a different part number too.

I looked the headers up on my PET. For -01 the part numbers are 996.111.101.52 (L) and 996.111.102.52 (R). for 02- the part numbers are 996.111.101.53 (L) and 996.111.102.52 (R). So it looks like the Right side is the same but the left is different. Not sure what the difference is but this is what PET shows. The headers for the X51 are different if that matters. I have heard of people putting X51 headers on a non-X51 car. Hope this helps!

It does. Thanks for looking that up! I've been scouring the internet this morning and came up empty. Odd that the right is the same but the left if different... That doesn't make much sense.

I guess to be on the safe side, I need to find a set off an 02-04, non x51.

The headers are all interchangeable between 99 996 to a 2005 997S (preferably in pairs).

The 996 3.4 and 3.6 have the same design but the tubes are bigger on the 3.6. I believe that the 3.4 x51 was the same as the regular 3.6 and the 3.6 X51 was the same as the 3.8 X51.

The 997 3.6 has an odd header that most people want to upgrade
The 997S X51 has the same style as the 996 3.4/3.6 again with bigger tubes.

I have a 1999 996 using 997S X51 headers.

Sorry don't know about the regular non x51 997.

Strange. I called the dealer today. They said that it's the same part (non X51) from 99-04.

There are multiple part numbers listed in the catalog - I'll send you a link in the morning and then you can show it to the dealer...but then again he has the same catalog as I do. Here's the link to the 996 parts catalogs - there are a couple of pages of exhaust part #'s

The hardare is interchnageable but it does not mean the performace is "improved or decreased"... We put a pair of 997 headers on my friends 996-2 which we track and low end power decreased slightly. High end was fine or slightly increased.

FWIW:
I got a noticeable increase in performance, with little to no audible difference, after upgrading my 996 x51 headers to 996 x51 headers on my 2001 3.4L.

looking at stock vs x51 headers side by side, it is very obvious the x51s are better. larger diameter, different bends, better match with the ports on the heads.

I did already have cargraphic mufflers installed for several months before I got the new headers.

because apparently the headers on the 997.1S are horrible, and i have extra 996.2 headers collecting dust.
