Totally agree. Having a C5 in the past, it would come down to the driver. I prefer the 996 much, much more, really no comparison.

I had a 2000 Vette 6M Convertible and currently drive a lightly modded 01 C4 Cabrio. Even with the extra 250 pounds for the AWD and Power Top, I weighed in about the same. At 6000 feet my best run (stock tires and car, C5 Vette) was a 14.7
My best run (before mods, stock C4 Cabrio was a 15.1 with a 2.2 60 foot), however I did do a high rpm drop (around 6k) and did a 1.7 60 foot. Unfortunately I had a faulty part (minor, I think a hose for air pressure return or something) and it shut the run down, otherwise it would have been in the 14.4-14.7 range. I wouldn't recommend high power launches on either if you don't want to start spending serious $$
So... If you put top drag tires on the Vette and do high RPM launches in the AWD... it will probably be an even race. From all the specs I've seen in the car mags the same year carrera 2s beats the Vette each time by a fraction.
I think the Vette has better instant torque, but the Porsche a better top end. In the twisties its no contest - Porsche.

Had an interesting ride in a friend's '04 Z06, bone stock 5K mile car in Atlanta one day. He thought he'd pick on a 996 C4S from a 3rd gear kick and, since his car supposedly ran 114.5mph in the 1/4 stock, he wasn't sweating it...until 2 gears after a fair kick and he still wasn't pulling on the 996. If anything the C4S, which was stock appearing, pulled the poor Vette a foot or two. He's a good friend of mine but I was laughing on the inside. I'm a big 911 fan and he's not. From a 2nd gear kick the Vette oughta put a car on the 996 fairly quickly, but up top the crout rockets seem to find some magic.
