Help with pic downloading

I can't seem to download any pics or an avatar. always says image too large. How do I "shrink" them down?

chris open the image in any graphics program like microsoft image with XP. then select option on top to resize. avatar i believe should be 100 by 100 pixels. and images to post can be like 640 by 480 pixel. then resave the image as a new name so you dont ruin your hi res image.
