996 Value--When will the value go up? I hope...
It definitely hurts when you paid 35k or more for a 996 that is worth almost 50% less in two years......
All i can say it is a great time to buy......and of course painful to give away for a blow out sale
imagine those that paid over 100k less than 2 years ago ... ouch
996 will never go up again

Where are you finding C2's for $17,500?
I just spoke with a Colorado car dealer that just sold an aero kit 99 996 with about 90k miles for $16900. They started at $22k and eventually after 3 months came down to $16900 and finally sold the car.
Bottom line for 996 owners is that unless they need to sell keep the car.
As for values increasing, imo, don't hold your breath. Porsche went from producing a handful of 993 that were the last of the air cooled cars and what some will argue are the most beautiful of the 911s to mass producing a new generation of 911 that was mostly dictated by the accountants to help save the company financially (which it did).
Top it of with 997s being substantially more desireable for a host of reasons not the least of which is general appearance (looks more 993ish) and the 996s find themselves the redheaded stepchildren of the Porsche world. Kinda like the 74-77 cars on many levels.
On that note, I am dedfinetly shopping for a 996 because it is a damn good car for the money!

I bought my C4S in Dec of 07. I knew it was a deprecating asset.
However, the enjoyment it brings me everytime I drive it is worth every penny.
Like today......went on a mountain run and had a blast!
I'll just hang on to it for a while.

You are right!
I like your answer! Driving these cars is priceless and down right FUN! On the flip side, I've lost more $$$ in the stock market and I'm still investing heavily everyday.
Automotive investment????? HAHA....PRECISION AUTOMOBILE!!!!!Purchased my purely for ejoyment....value dropped 50% and in 50 years ill still have her.....Push the car all the time!!!!
1st time buyer looking for guidance
hello:
I live in Pennsylvania and I am pretty well sold on the following model and options.
911 Carrera 4
-Heated Seats
-Midnight Blue Metallic
-Rear Window Wiper
-Self-Dimming Mirrors
-Bose High End Sound
-XM radio
I don't really care if I get a 2008, 2009, or 2010 model as long as the mileage is under 500.
But, because this is a bad economy, and because I am cheap, I want to get the best deal possible. Should i wait a little longer?
Also, I am planning to plunk down cash. My thought is why bother with investments that promise little or no return. I could also stash the cash and create a "car fund" and get into a lease and get a new one every so often. However, I am not sure how long $70k-$80K will last with that scenario, and I don't know how long people tend to hold onto their 911s.
I will use mine regularly, but will probably try to keep it out of the rain and snow as much as possible and use another vehicle for kicking around.
Any thoughts?

Searching myself...
The 996 is an incredible value for the current market. Originally I was searching for a BMW E46 M3 until somebody pointed out to me the 996 was actually in the same buying range (22k-29k) or so. So I'm happy as a buyer, but as a seller I'd be somewhat frustrated for sure. The MKIV Supra market is absolutely dumping as well and I wonder how much the Corvette C6 has to do with that?

I would wait a month or a few months....look at 2007-2009's and look at GT3s or 2004 - 2008 Turbos.

flip side... you can always get stuck in the "just wait a few more months" perpetual debate. my advice: lock on the car you want, set a budget, and when you find said car in said budget, purchase.
... its inevitable.
Here is an offline thought - if Geitner succeeds in asking for the nation's debt limit to be raised over $12 trillion, this could start massive inflation, and that could make the dollar worth less, and then the value of your car (at least the amount in $) may actually increase.
So it's possible, that's all I'm sayin'.
