997 shifter in a 996

Is this a good upgrade? Is the short shifter better? I have seen a couple of posts in which a 996 shifter was replaced with the 997. Was looking at short shift kit but thought I would ask before doing. Is this a DIY?

I did the 997 shifter after having a B&M for a while. I liked the short throw from the B&M but its notchy feeling wasn't enjoyable. The 997 is very smooth but you will notice increase throw from it. I fixed this by taking about 1/2 inch from the handle and now it feels better and looks better when parked.

Update

I put the 997 shifter in and it seems smoother than the 996. I like the feel better, I also tried a b/m short shifter and did not like the feel. The install was not that bad and I was able to do it in about an hour.

a must. saves a half inch on both ends, is smoother, and not as sloppy. great upgrade for the price +/-$150 used. i have had for over a year and love it. easy diy 1-2 hrs max. there are a couple things to be careful with though. pm me if you need instructions and tips. i have great instructions with pix, but have to find.

Had a B&M and didn't like the notchyness. Put in a 997 shifter and love it. It is supposed to be a "little" bit shorter than the 996 shifter.

I like the 997 shifter

Feels firmer and shorter than the 996, I am going to upgrade the shift linkage next.

I installed the 997 shifterbox in my C4S in less than an hour - Bought on eBay for 50 dollars - The absolute best Mod I have done so far !! I also got a 997S Shiftknob and that gives you an even better feel !!!

Since I have installed another one for a friend in a 996 99 and he bought the 997 shifterbox for over 200 dollars at a dealer because he could not wait after driving mine - And he loves it !!

Just do it man

Regards Sigfus

P.s. You can check out photos on Cardomain just search sigfus

Well, I went with a B&M (from jstrat) due to the reason that I liked the UUC SSK that I installed in my BMW despite the same complaints about notchiness (which was actually non-existent when I installed it in my car). I haven't installed the B&M yet as I was waiting for the Agency Shift Linkage which I just received yesterday from the mail so I can do it in one shot. I do hope the upgraded shift linkage would help reduce the notchiness that jstrat had experienced that may or may not happen in my car. I'll let you guys know next week when I get the B&M and Agency Linkage installed.

I installed the B&M in my 996 and, except when really cold (35* or below) felt that the "notchiness" added to the great feel of the shifts. My 997 is smoother, but doesn't have the same direct feel (still a grunt when cold until it warms up) and am contemplating the B&M conversion to this car. I will drive it for a while though before I make the change.

Looks like the B&M, but at the price of a B&M, I would not buy this if, for nothing else, peace of mind.

I went with the B&M and then switched to the 997. I have a B&M shifter ready to install in the my old 996 carrier. If anyone is interested PM me.

if you are doing it, make sure you get the 997 short shift rather than the regular 997 version. its super nice. the stock 997 is shorter and more precise than the 996 but the factory 997 short shift housing is the best there is IMHO. all bolts in nice and easy, you just pull out your center console and then replace the whole shifter housing unit for the new one.
