Thinking of Buying a Used 996 - What Would My Running Costs Be?
hmm, new clutch and RMS (since it was open) 1500, oil changed at 200, air and cabin filters for 100 and a new water pump (forget how much that one cost). But am planning on taking a Porsche DIY course in the spring offered at one of the local colleges through our PCA....hopefully that should boost the confidence a bit to tackle a few of the bigger things that are sure to go.
I would think the maintenance costs would be about the same. the chance is the things that break down.
the list for my car, i think, is kind of typical. Most items were found at the PPI so i could build my purchase price around the repairs needed. The surprises so far have been minimal.
The S variant is so much better, go that way if you find a good car.

There's an similar thread discussing this as well. Here it is:

My experience is that most used cars are going to need something soon. It seems to take a few months (or more) to sort out the little bugs (hopefully no big bugs). I always have PPI's done but it never fails that a relay or switch goes bad or a piece of trim is cracked that I didn't notice before. I am kind of a perfectionist and I like everything to work and look as it should. My cars always end up better than when I bought them but it does take time and money to stay on top of anything that comes up and it will. I've avoided major drivetrain issues. These cars seem to have pretty good internals but its the peripheral stuff like electrical and wear items that drain my wallet.
get a cpo car. in the two years i have had my 02' (under warranty), i have had most of the common problems: ignition switch ~$550, window regulator ~1k (lasted 2 years), oil sending unit ~$350, not to mention taking in 3x for driver side window coming out of alignment and catching on the rear window $??? ...finally figured out the window was not being held in because a rubber part which holds it slipped to one side.
oil changes, normal service, brakes, tires ~$4k (indy. add 1k for dealer)
***i drive 22.5k/yr. w/2-3 track days/yr
..no rms/ims issues though
...yet!!!

My passenger window is doing the same thing. Can you tell me what rubber part your talking about?
Thanks
if you're buying from a dealership see if they have any warranties available, that's what I did and it puts my mind at rest with a $100 deductible for basically anything that can go wrong
If you can do it yourself...maint cost may be no big deal. Something going wrong youare #$@!ed.
If you are like me and don't have the time, tools, skills to DIY, then you are also #$@!ed.
But its a nice car~

I really, really hope you used this information to drive down the sale price! I would have walked the hell away from that one without some deep discounts...
I say go for a 02, for about 25 to 35 grand depending on the year and model, they are get cars, i had one, and out of the bmw and mercedes i owned, the porsche gave me the least trouble.
