Need Advice on buying my first 911- 996
Thanks for your reply as well.. I have checked on the brake pads alternator and general maintenance items.. They don't seem that expensive.. The last car or should I say mini van.lol Has 60,000 on it and it a 2001.. I have done all repairs to it myself and looks runs new. It now has 120,000 on it.. I drive it kind of hard at times... So I was just shocked to find a 2001 911 for 21,000. So I did some research and found some issue with these models.. So the miles being 63000 did not seem high to me.. Would love to buy this car and can afford it but not wanting to have to buy an engine for it any time soon.. So may be the BMW or an older 911.. IDK..
Thanks

Bottomline is, you can go with a higher miles 996 and take your chances of spending sooner on repairs or go with a year or two old, low miles Z4 for the same price and take less risk on being surprised by unexpected repairs. This is up to you and all we have hear are inputs
on what we know and what we experienced.
I'm in the same boat as you are. I am looking at either a 2003/2004 996 c2, or a C6 corvette (trying to find a 2008 for my price range, they have more HP). I feel like with the vette I'm going to be getting a brand new car (most likely only one previous owner), and with the 996 I'm going to get more of a mystery car (light accidents that have not been reported, or missing something in an inspection). I love the power of the Vette but the style and manuverability of the 996 is more appealing to me. I gotta make a tough decision
I would say if anything with the 996, go with 2002+ models because they have been reported to be less likely to have the RMS issue.

OK I have read many many threads on here and I can say i am at a crossroads.. I have the option to buy a 2001 911 c 2. With 63,000 miles.
All services recorded and the RMS Clutch and water pump have all been replaced during its life.. 60,000 mile service done as well..
I have started to find out about the IMS bearing if I am saying this right can fail with no warning.. I plan on driving this car daily.. I can get it for around 20k. My other options to buy is a BMW Z4 which I really like both.. I just always wanted the 911.. Something about these cars even as a kid has drawn me to them.. Just the 80 to 110,000 price has held me back for a new one.lol
Thanks for any advice

I would choose the 996 everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. Of course I'm biased. :-) As to the miles, I just (2 weeks ago) bought an 03 996 C2 with 61K miles. Full records, 60K service etc., and CPO warranty for 2 years 100,000K miles. The CPO was important to me because of the possible cost of repairs.
In your case definitely get a PPI, and check into extended warranties. A lot of post on warranties here and other forums.

CPO is the way to go if you can find one. I didnt but went with a third party warranty ( either Fidelity or Easycare) from what I've researched. It can add a few thousand to the price but then again it eases my mind..
Don't let any one of us scare you...
If you love and always wanted one and can't wait (like me), pick a good deal and go for it. Or if you can wheather your desire a little longer, wait - save - and go for a newer year / model. Good luck!

Boy oh boy, this issue constantly come up. I'm am in exactly the same boat. Do I or Don't I? Cayeene's have the coolant tube issues, Boxsters/Caymans--rms ims issues. I wouldn't hesistate to buy a 2002 Z06 without a warranty and service history, but God forbid you buy a Porsche without those. Scares the hell out of ya! These forums even have me reading the damn replacement proceedures for different jobs, to see if I think I could do it myself! (nuts!). But in the end you want what you want, and I'll be getting a 911 sooner or later. Good Luck, just find a good indy nearby.
I agree with the last four post here by our fellow 6speed members. If you really love it then GO FOR IT! The best suggestion is to purchase extended warranty for 2 years / 100,000 miles. Yeah it cost thousands of dough BUT it's better than what I spent which is around $20,000 in one year worth of repairs.
Don't let the 60,000 mile service decieve you. When I purchased mine, it has 60,000 mile service from a Porsche dealer and that didn't save me from major repairs. No regular maintenance can prevent the major repairs that I did in my car.
Again, if you love it then there's no stopping but be prepared for the unexpected. In the flip side, BE PREPARED TO HAVE A BLAST IN A 996!

I brought an 02 with 34KM from Carmax and I purchased the 5yr/60KM extended warranty for $2K. Unfortunately that extended warranty is exclusively for cars from Carmax. Anyway, I heard from many people that Porsches are actually quit reliable so may be you will be fine. Good luck and have fun when you get your car. It will be worth every penny.
Well, you'll see every answer and every opinion on this board. If you go back a few weeks there was a debate about high mileage vs. low mileage cars of about the same age. In that thread everyone was convinced, and probably convincing each other, that the low mileage car was nothing more than a garage bomb waiting to explode, and that if the car already had high mileage it probably wasn't going to blow up. So.... who do you listen to? I dunno. It's usually an equation. High quality, low mileage, low price. Pick 2. Where do you live? Up here in the snowy Northeast, now is probably a pretty good time to buy a used rwd sports car. I bought mine a month and a half ago for $5000 less than asking price. Aim for more than you can afford and don't be afraid to walk if they don't want your money.
Sounds like a plan....and a good one at that. These days are good days for deals
!!So.. 911 all the way

!
the bottom line,do some research, find a car with a great history(records, how many owners etc.)and imo a facelift version ,the 996 series greatly improved after 2001,these cars are very reliable, like anything if they were taken care of there gonna last!obviously a car that costs 75 or 80.000,well when it comes time for maintaining it and fixing something that breaks is gonna cost a little bit more,i really think some of these stories about the rms issues and other things, although based on fact are a little hyped!you have to budget for certain things tires etc.i think if its been well looked after and you take care of it then there really pretty bulletproof!
