Cabriolet NOISE

Hi Guys
I own a 1999 Carrera 4 Cabriolet that has a very annoying problem. With the soft top up it makes a sharp knocking sound from the top of the middle of the windscreen with every bump in the road. With the soft top down there is no noise. Does anybody have any thoughts on what I should look for or how to solve this?
Thanks very much
Etienne

obvious guess would be that the center latch is closing all the way, but I'm sure you've checked that. I can't think of what else it could be unless there is something loose inside the top knocking against the solid section of the top.

I don't have knocking sounds, but i do get squeaks when i hit a bump at slow speed. My suggestion is to have someone locate the sound when you drive your car. good luck

Thanks guys. I was hoping to avoid a visit to the dealer (

I know that the soft top was replaced by the agent at one stage prior to me owning the car. Maybe something went wrong there..

Take care

a few things could be wrong

- inspect the windshield header. i am guessing there are dirt trapped in there. you may need to pull on the weatherstrip and clean it with a rag.

- also look at the latch to see if there is any play.

- the flocking panel (plastic piece that is under the canvass that makes the front par of the top stiff) may be warped. when warped, it would make lots of noises rubbing against the header. you'll probably want dealer to look at this one.

I have a squeak/knock of the soft top (from the body/frame flex) when going up on drive ways etc. perhaps that could be part of your problem too.

good luck!

Sid.

Yep, isn't she a beauty!

I put a extreme motor works '08 GT2 bumper which was customized to fit on a 996 and added Techart headlight masks.

I've just tried several sizes of photo's but they're all uploaded as small thumbs...
Maybe I have to do 10 posts before I can post larger ones, sorry about that.

Sid.

I had a knocking noise and it turned out to be my ezpass which was in one of those suction cup holders on the windshield.

Just saying...

Hi Sid
Yes, that sounds like my problem. Is there anyway to minimize that? Any thoughts at all? I find it so irritating that I mostly use the hard top.
Take care

I had a knocking noise on my BMW Convertible where the top mounts to the windshield. It turned out to be the two rollers that the top hooks to. The rollers had some play in them. New parts ordered and installed, no more noise.

The plastic inserts that cover the access panel for the manual open and the motion detectors get loose and rattle really badly. It's not a "knock", but it is loud and annoying. I live in CA, so my solution is never to close the top.

Yup, putting the top down

From what I've been told this is just something that comes with the territory of the cab frame flex however I've never had this problem on my Ferrari 360 so they could just have been feeding me bull...
