Unless someone gave you the factory Bose head unit with the optic loop, amp, speakers etc, the installation cost might still make it cost prohibitive. Plug and play is an oximoron with Porsches. If you DYI, you;ll end up taking it to the dealer anyway to get it to work right. The nav is CD-ROM based, no voice command and you'll still have to spend a small fortune to get an IPOD adaptor. You're better off going aftermarket headunit (which has voice nav and full IPOD) amps and speakers. You'll spend the same amount but for a much better system. Don't forget a sound system is only as good as its installer. So find an installer that can let you listen to a system in a car like yours.

The z120bt is coming out soon so you can find the 110's for less than $800 with rebate.

Pioneer will sell an s/w upgrade for the 110 that give the new features of the 120 for $150-200.

Avic411.com is a great resource for info on these units.

Installation on a 2002 or older 996 should be pretty easy. In a car 2003 or newer, the MOST system is used, which uses fiber optic cables instead of old-fashioned copper wires. This make upgrading much more of a challenge for these cars. A Pioneer AVIC system, for example, is not compatible with a MOST system.

I was reading the DIY on the AVIC-Z1 on the Renntech forum, and it seems the complete trim surround needs to be fabricated.

Just wanted to confirm about the AVIC-Z110BT, it would be much less work and more convenient!

Thanks.

The supplied trim fits perfect. Only had to fab the top piece.

I just want to add what I have found from my research on this topic in hopes that someone can either confirm or deny what I am about to post. I have a 2003 996 C4S with the CDR23 unit which has the MOST system. I initially searched for a way to simply swap out the CDR23 unit with an aftermarket head unit that was iPod ready. For a while, I had thought that the only way to accomplish this was to re-wire the entire car due to the fact that aftermarket head units are not compatible with the fiber optic system. Re-wiring is needless to say costly if done by professionals. Discouraged, I continued to search for other solutions and came across the mobridge unit, Dension 500 unit, and navtv, among a couple others. However, these units cost a minimum of $500 (ballpark).

I was not satisfied with that conclusion, so I continued searching for other ways. Recently, I read a thread on 6speed in which an owner simply took his vehicle to a shop in my area (Gold Star Audio in Irvine, CA) and had an aftermarket unit installed, replacing the CDR23. He had the MOST system as well, but it posed no issue for the shop. Thus, I emailed the shop to learn more and here’s what was discussed:

“Me: I own a 2003 911 C4S (996) and I am interested in upgrading the factory stereo, which is a CDR 23. After conducting some research I have learned that this unit is wired with fiber optic cables and that a simple head unit swap is not possible unless the new unit is fiber optically compatible or the entire system is re-wired, effectively removing all the fiber optics. Is this true? I am interested in a unit that is at the very least iPod ready. Thank you for your time.

GSA: Replacing this unit is not too difficult, we can cap the fiber optics that go in and out of the head unit, basically connecting them so we don’t break the loop, and everything in the car will work properly. If the vehicle has a Bose system, we have to bypass the factory amplifier or add an amplifier. If it does not, the process is even easier. Any single or double din stereo can be fit into that vehicle.”

I also have read on 6speed somewhere that the fiber optic cables travel only from the head unit to the amp and that the wires from the amp to the speakers are traditional copper, so that is why re-wiring is not necessary.

So there you have it. A light at the end of the tunnel. Many of you with the CDR23 may not have even known that this was a concern, but there are also many of you who are like me and see the fiber optic issue being a major obstacle. This post is intended to encourage P-car owners to go out, find the answers, and finally put this issue to bed. I have just discovered this shop over the past week and have yet to visit them, but I plan to shortly. So I am not out of the woods just yet. I’ll post an update if need be. Hopefully, someone can confirm or deny any of the statements in this post. I hope this information is helpful. Good luck.

Jespiritu is correct. Fiber optic signal input into the Bose amp, copper wire output to the speakers. Actually, the best way to describe an install on the 03+ 9X6 vehicle w/ Bose is that the procedures are similar to one performed on a 9X7 vehicle w/ Bose. Rewiring is unnecessary. Factory head unit to Bose amp is the only portion that is fiber optic when concerning an aftermarket head unit. Bypass the factory amp, and like the 9X7 vehicles connect audio output to the speaker wire harness that currently connects to the factory Bose amp.

Adding Nav. to my 996

This is a question in regards to the Porsche background set on your Pioneer Nav system. I saw how icemann633 supplied it to you. I am having difficulty IMing him. Can you tell me where I can find it, it looks very cool and professional. Thanks in advance, Harmony Jim

I'm butting in but it's actually easy to do:
1) Google Porsche emblems and pick the one you like and save the image.
2)Manipulate the image if necessary with any photo editor(size, contrast etc).
3)Get an SD card or any other medium and make a folder called "pictures" then copy your image to that folder.
4) Transfer the image to the splash folder in the "system settings" folder in your car's device.

Et voila!
