Adding Nav. to my 996

I switch out my non nav stock stuff and put bose system with nav. in is it just a plug and play swap. If I change speakers, amp and head unit with factory navigation are there any problems to look for?

What year is your 996? There are differences in the newer years that make swapping components more difficult.

Hello everyone,

I want to put in a Navigation. I would like a Nav with radio, dvd player and of course the sat/gps capability.

I do my own wrenching and work as a technician, as well, so I want to do the install myself.

I'm new to this forum and don't want to get flamed for not looking it up or searching for a good step-by-step.

My car is a late 996 C-4 tip.

Suggestions, comments, advice? Snide comments?

Thanks.

Seen a buncha writeups on the Pioneer Avic systems with some nice clean looking systems. Depending on your model year, usually not worth trying to go OEM with the older Porsche nav systems.

Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT

Here's mine with the Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT. Easy install, no surprises. Just move the control cluster down and pop it in. You'll need to make a trim piece for the top to fill the gap. This unit has it all and does it all.

Nice unit, I almost bought one for my last car.

Even easier on the '01+ models since the HVAC is already reallocated to the bottom console to make way for cup holders.

This thread is timely. Getting ready to pull the trigger on a Navi unit myself. I'm looking at the JVC KWNX7000 with iPod and Sirius. I picked this one because of the detachable faceplate (mine is a cab). Hopefully the installation is as straightforward as I've read...

Do the work yourself???

Hello,

Do you plan to do the work yourself??? If you are going to hire it out, I don't blame you; but if you do the install yourself, let the forum community know... I can't find a good step-bystep for the nav install, on a 996. Maybe I just need to look harder.

If you are in Colorado, I will come and help out, or do it at my place. That goes for anyone thinking of doing an install (or just about anything else to their P-car) and they are less than 3 hours from Colorado Springs, I would like to see/help/ kibitz/ make humorous and tasteful comments or just watch what you are doing to that poor little defenseless Porsche.

Also, I have the full factory service manuals for the 996, some tools and almost 50 years of experience.... (We really had a shade tree that had a picnic table raised off the ground on cement blocks and lag bolted to the tree.) Hence the term 'shade tree mechanics. My brother and Dad and I started with go carts and field cars back in the mid sixties.

Maybe start a thread on this subject. Didn't mean to ramble on and hijack this thread. Sorry.

Good luck.

Nice. I have a few questions about your install. Does the supplied trim surround from the AVIC-Z110BT kit measure exactly the width of the 996 center console? And only the top trim piece needs to be made?

I was reading the DIY on the AVIC-Z1 on the Renntech forum, and it seems the complete trim surround needs to be fabricated.

Just wanted to confirm about the AVIC-Z110BT, it would be much less work and more convenient!

Thanks.

That link is to a Kenwood install. I was wondering about the Pioneer.

the process of install is the same. I can tell you that I have seen the Pioneer install somewhere too but don't recall where. Good luck

I was actually asking about the width of the supplied trim piece of the Pioneer, which looks like a perfect fit width-wise without any cutting or modifying. I just wanted to verify.
