To buy or not to buy

I've lurked around the site for a while and finally registered yesterday. I'm trying to decide if I want to pick up a 996. Prices seem to be pretty decent for something in the 30k-50k mile range. I love the looks of the car I'm just wondering if I'll be let down by the performance. I've always owned Turbo cars or V8's. I'm just wondering what cars some of you guys owned before the na 911 and if you are ever bored? I'm trying to decide between a few cars right now. C5z06, 996 na, 03/04 cobra, or possibly another supra TT. All of those cars offer something different. But whatever I get will be my to and from work car as well as my weekend fun car.

I will say the forum is somewhat lacking with people. Is there another forum dedicated to 996's somewhere anyone knows of.

The N/A 911 is a great car. All the other cars you listed are much faster. Do i get bored in mine? Never. It's a great car to own. I think it will hold value more then those other cars and looks better as well. If your worried about speed im sure you can pick up a C4S or even a TT for a good price. Just remember there is always someone out there with a faster car,buy the car to enjoy it.

i use my car as a daily driver and occasional driver ed car. Next week I will be spending 2 days at Watkins Glen International.
I have been driving P-cars since 1976.
It is a good DD. I can even get my buddie and our golf clubs into it.
One thing about them, is that they become completely different (and much better) at >5k rpm on the twisties. If you dont go to drivers ed events, you are may be missing a very large aspect of these cars.
of course, once you get on the tracks, then the mods and updates start coming.
again, cost of upkeep is not trivial. for example, the 295/30/18s on my rear go in about 12-15 km.

Get the Porsche. Very different car, worth trying. It is fun even at 20 miles per hour.

JB, I am new to this site. I have a 2000 C2 with Turbo Twist alloys. I wish to replace them and noticed you mentioned you have 295/30/18's on your car. Are they mounted on the factory wheels? What is the width, offset, brand, etc of your front and rear wheel/tire combo? I take it 295's will fit? Any other items of info on the tire/wheel combo you have mounted would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim

Thanks JB, I don't have enough posts to send a PM. Thanks for the info, C2's can fit 265/35/18's on the rear, or 275/30/19's. Any reason (other than the spare tire size being an 18) to stay away from 19's on a 996 C2 cab? Thanks for the help, Jim

if you are a HP junky you will be disappointed in a 996. If you want a refined total packaged fun car that is priced right the 996 is the way to go.

When you are driving your 996, you won't be looking at the mustangs or vettes. They will be looking at you. It's just a different car. But try and get the tt if you want to keep up.

Get the TT or GT2 996 if you can get a good deal on one.
