I would like to get some ideas about which cosmetic mod's would make the car looks more modern.

Spoilers, etc...

I have the Carrera S 18" wheels. Add spacers (7mm front, 14mm rear) that make a nice fit.
Decent spoilers/body kits, 19" wheels, LED tails. And don't forget suspension, not only does it provide better handling, but also a better stance which adds to the looks.

Yeah don't forget the interior is just as important as the exterior. Go with carbon fiber or silver colored interior parts.
Good Luck

15inch BBS RS with 345 wide P-Zero's and an aerokit!

Definitely the aero kit. And if I could get these wheels to fit I'd be all over it!

One of the biggest aesthetic change you can do to your 996 is to change up the wheels! I'd recommend that you check out the Forgestar F14 flow form ultra while your at it. A body kit doesn't hurt either and one of the most popular styles seem to be Techart! Check out this Techart Porsche 996 Twin Turbo with 19″ Forgestar F14 finished in piano black:
