why do people say this, i thought anything past 1998, last year for the REAL (air-cooled) porsche, is not a REAL porsche, i have a 2002 996, had no idea this wasn't a real porsche until after i bought it, money had nothing to do with it, i do like the older turbo bodies better, but couldn't see paying that much more on a car that didn't have all amenities of a newer car, dependability & cold air just to start, so why do people say buy the latest model you can afford?

The 996 represents a complete redesign. Previous versions were iterative improvements on the original concept. Clearly in *any* brand new model there are kinks to work out. Hence the latest model 993 model years are *so* desirable. Since 1999 Porsche has continually enhanced and improved the 996 concept. The advent of the mkII in 2002 was a major iteration, but there were minor changes all the way along.

Another thing I'll add to this post as I think of it; check out the dealer in as much detail as you do the car. BBB, online comments/complaints, reviews etc. If the dealer has a lot of complaints and poor business rating, then clearly he doesn't care about his reputation and *any* deal is risky.

Dealers with excellent reputations will work much harder to maintain them. Generally that will mean they will spend a lot more effort ensuring the cars they put on their lot are excellent specimens and if something *does* go wrong (it can happen) they'll be more likely to take better care of you.

regard tires, I'm running Nitto Invos, 305's on the back. Mounted brand new february 2009, drive 400 miles every week and the rears are still with a lot of meat left. Maybe it depends on how you drive. No track time for me...
Best tire ever.

But in 2003 is when all the electrical got updated. IE, you could buy a plug and play stock Navi deck and plug up add antenna and be done with. Cant do that on 2002 and down. So if that doesn't matter, 2002, but if it does, 2003 and up. I wish i knew this when i got my 2002, I would have opted for 2003.

Other factors, I'd only buy either C4s or a carrera with an Aero kit, they look better IMHO.
I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I noticed the Plug and play Navi. Could you start a new thread as to how, what and how much.

Thanks

I purchased a 2001 coupe ,black on black w/ 65,000 miles for 25k. The carfax was clean, however after purchasing the car I noticed a small amount of overspray on the hood latch . I am doing the 60 k maintanence on it and have found no mechanical problems. The car runs like perfect and I have found no problems. At 25k I bought a driver, am happy with the car .didn't have time to look for the perfect deal, I am 50, life is too short. Good luck all.

I had always purchased Pirelli p-zero's but wanted to cut tire replacement costs considering 10-12k miles of usage per set. Went with Sumitomo htrz3 and was highly skeptical of how they would perform considering how cheap they are, relatively speaking.

Can easily squeeze 15k miles out of them with a bit to spare. Slightly higher road noise but barely noticeable. Handles just as well and actually seems to ride more comfortably than on the Pirelli's.
