Engine dies on hwy with clutch in...

OKAY, this only happens when I do a hard run get rmps up to about 6.5-7k and and then slow down and hold in the clutch the RPM's literaly will just drop all the way down till it turns the engine off. I can just put it in gear and let of the clutch and it will resume. But I found it odd. If im driving normal on the hwy even at 4k rmp and hold the clutch in its fine, the car just goes back to idle at 1k RMP. IT doesnt do it all the time, some times when i do a hard pull it drops as low as 600 and just bounces back to 1000rpm. but just today, i was being messed with a darn EVO...lol and did 2 hard runs and as soon as i pushed in the clutch (while at 6000rpm) the rps just fell and it died.

IT ONLY HAPPEN WHEN I DO A HARD RUN AND THEN PRESS IN THE CLUTCH, but not every time...

Do you have a CAI?

Cool

Maybe the ECU hasn't adjusted to the increased air flow.

You could try cleaning the MAF.

I had this happen to me on my 997 that I supercharged.I cleaned the air filter re-oiled it........and applied too much oil!
If you just installed a K&N filter.....is it the oiled type?
If so......that oil,if too much oil is applied, can transfer to a MAF and cause it to NOT run properly!
Clean the MAF......

The other thing is to have a spare filter around.....that way it is easy to swap out and allows you more time to pre-oil the filter once cleaned. When oiling DO NOT apply enough to cover the filter that second....but rather apply a small bit of oil and I mean small......then let it sit overnight. You will be surprised at how far a small bit of oil will go!

OkaY, on the way to autozone this morning the CEL light came on. I had them hook up the scanner and guess what?? "manafacturer control fuel air metering" code P1128 and pending code P1130. I went ahead and got the MAF Cleaner. I removed the MAF sprayed it down well it let it dry and did this 2 more times just to make sure i got it all clean. Put it back in the car drove up to AutoZone and had them clear the codes. Now i just have to wait and make sure they dont pop up again.

The GOOD thing is I did make a couple hard runs and this time the car never died when i would let off the gas and push in the clutch while at the high RMPs. So I hope this is it!

IT DID IT AGAIN.... got the code and the car will die if at high rpms and the clutch is in and gas is let off...

I called K&N, they got my info gave me a customer service claim # and i was on hold to talk to there warranty dept. for about 15-20 min before it requested for me to leave a message and that some one whold return my call within 48hr. Well I got the call back in about 20 min so i was happy.
The tech asked for the codes that were being thrown, so i have him the two codes and I also told him about how it will die/stall out if at high rpms and you let of the gas and press in the clutch. He told me that there are a number others with the same issue and it seems to be exclusive on the 996. He said there is a fix in the works, but for now just return the FIPK for a full refund. I asked if it was fine just to keep the unit in and wait for the fix and he said its not reccomended since it is leaning itself out and he doesnt want it to case damage to the valves or piston.

SO WOULD A COLD AIR INTAKE CAUSE IT TO LEAN OUT SOO MUCH THAT IT WOULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE 3.4l ENGINE?

Hey man i had the same problem. My MAF burnt out so what i did what buy a new MAF and changed the K&N filter to an AEM Oil Less filter. 2 years later no CEL or nothing. K&N Filter is too much of a hassle with the oil. Good luck with the fix!
