It's a 99 C2, so a 3.4. I'd like to know what he wants for that engine. It would be another option to look at, considering my engine has 160,000 km (100,000m) on it. I have a mechanic friend in Red Deer that could check it out.

I have over 6K miles on my repaired head. In all conversations and experience I have had with intermixes I have not talked with anyone who had a slipped or cracked cylinder, although I have seen a lot of information on this problem. I am just not sure it is more common than the cracked head issue.

I also have one friend who had a 996 with a small pin hole in the head, casting flaw that finally gave way. He had it repaired and the car is now fine.

Not to sound like the 3.4 motor is junk but just about all the ones I was involved with were swapped out to 3.6 motor or 3.8 the thought of the extra power is just to much to let go. the varo cam plus bigger motor is a easy upgrade. That's real world power..... I only opened one 3.4 motor for rebuild and that was for a wholesaler, cylinder #4 had a thumbnail size piece missing... Most others took their cars back after finding out what the problem was..... I was not the first place they stop nor the last! Wished them luck...

What are you doing for the ECU? Say a 3.4 DBC to a 3.6 or 3.8 DBW

You can always see how low that guy will go on that link I sent you on the engine, and take apart the one you have a spare parts.

As soon as I find out how serious the damage is on mine, I'll decide if I need to make him an offer. Can anyone give me an idea what a used 3.4 with 28k on it should sell for. I haven't seen too many come up for sale.

How much suspension comes off with this drop? I assume transmission and engine come out as one unit? You take any pics? I'm about to drop my turbo engine at the house, I figure this is pretty similar, but with more 'room' than the turbo.

Thanks!

just remove the rear bumper guard, no suspension needs to be dropped. just waiting for ims bearing to come from ln engineering on monday and should have the engine ready to go back in mid week.

Hey guys, I have a cylinder 1 cracked head and I've been searching for solutions for years now. I recently came across some threads that say you can fix a cracked head. I would like to drop the engine and fix this cracked head so I can finally get back on the road. Please send me some help or suggestions about how to drop the engine and fix this crack.

If you haven't done already, download a set of Porsche repair manuals. They are very good for this job. I paid $10 for a CD, but I believe you can find some for free it you look hard enough. If you have done this kind of work before, then this job will not be a problem. You need a couple of special tools for removing the cams, but you can fabricate them yourself once you see some of the home made examples that myself and others have made. Take your time and ask questions. When you get into it, let me know and I will forward some pics.

I downloaded all the manuals I could find. They say "996 manuals" but they are not specified by year. And after taking out the engine and removing the cams, I should be able to see a crack in the head right? Do i get the crack repaired? If so by who? Thanks for the prompt response Gmax33.
