Amp opinion

OK,
2000 millenium edition, has the 6 speaker sys with DSP. PPlan is to get the focal subs, and a powered sub behind the seats.
Once i do that, should i replace the stock amp? I am not interested in ear bleeding, and its a given that you can always have more power.... With what and where do i put it?

I second using the Alpine PDX amps. Good clean power in a small package and mounting is a snap!

x3. Small, efficient, and lightweight compared to others.

The car does have an OEM Hayes amp, but uses low level inputs (ie speaker leads from the OEM head unit. This will not work with an aftermarket amp unless you install/buy low level RCA converters which basically take your existing leads at the factory amp and turn them into RCA out puts. You can usually pick these up at a good car stereo shop.

I thought all the cars with door speaker (subs) had the HIFi option with the Hayes amp. Are you sure crazyed71's does not have the amp? The amp is located under a grill next to the cd player (if you have one of those).

I said that he does have the Hayes amp but he cant simpy wire in an aftermarket amp as there are no RCA outputs coming from the factory head unit.

Sorry, my misunderstanding. In my cse I got an adaptor from Becker that allowed me to run RCA cable from the OEM head unit low level outputs to the new amp. You can see the adaptor here

http://www.beckerautosound.com/parts/index_porsche.html

Ran two sets, one of which included an extra wire for the power antennae lead from the head unit which is used to control the power to the amp. With this set up I am able to use the balance and fader from the head unit.

Those RCAs from Becker would make it very easy. Nice find.

There's two adapters you can get to make it easier. 1 is the plug that handles power, ground, illumination, etc. the other is a separate piece for the RCA's.

I tihink I paid under $30 for both IIRC. You can just use the Metra line of connectors for Audi's since they are the same and more readily available. I don't have part numbers off hand but I'll try to upload a couple pics tonight.

Forget if you need an antenna adaptor too(I think so).
