4s engines and na engines are same. check your sources.

Question

what about the transmission? i remember reading somewhere that the 4S has the same tiptronic as the turbo. Maybe the 02+ Carrera 2 does as well for that matter..

also, i talked to Ken Garff porsche today, and they told me that tiptronic 996's DO NOT suffer from IMS bearing failures. Is this true? That doesnt seem to make a whole lot of sense to me.

Not 100% certain, but I think manual and autos both suffer from IMS. I mean, can potentially suffer from IMS failure.

I've heard a rumor that tips *seem* to be less prone - but not imune.

Moral of the story? Look into a 996TT. You CAN find one for under $40k. It is better for so many reasons...

But ultimately, you have to make this decision. Let us know what you get. Good luck!
Turbo is "Better for so many reasons?" I see it as a complete waste of money compared to the C4S! Turbo has 100bhp more that gets you what... not quite a second faster 0-60 time then then the C4S? C4S has the turbo's Wide Body, Turbo brakes, Turbo suspension, Turbo wheels, same exact Turbo Chasis, Turbo body kit, is 10's of thousands of dollars cheaper, and best of all no turbos to fry. What are the "many reasons" that a turbo is better besides saying you have twin turbo's and cool rear air inlets? I would never buy a turbo, but instead a GT3. What am I missing here about the turbo's versus the C4S? Thanks.

While the real difference between turbo and C4S is the engine (GT1 Block without IMS issues is better), Condor is right on the other points (C4S also gets same 4WD and full leather interior standard as on the turbo). Also, turbo parts are notably more expensive than C4S -- look at a few on-line catalogues and see the differential.

Unless you need the extra horsepower (which can get you in trouble quicker ), you can take the $10M turbo differential and upgrade the C4S suspension with PSS9/10 or X74, GT3 sways/links/arms, etc. and RS engine mounts [all of which are desirable for any non-GT Pcar, including the turbo] as well as have the IMS upgrade done (along with renewing the RMS with the newer version while you're in there), and still have thousands of $$ left for driver education to learn how to use what you've got.

I happen to be a fan of the wide body, but the C2 is lighter and the GT-3 (tho not the GT-3RS) also uses the narrow body.

In your $40M price range, you can get a very good 996 C4S, a lower-priced 996 turbo or a lower-priced 997.1 C2 -- the 997 comes with the continued march of improvements, esp in the redesigned center stack and interior, shifter, etc., and you are more likely to get a CPO warranty on a later car.

The question then is how much do you have left to spend to start upgrading it (see above)!

I picked up my '02 C4S Tiptronic last Feb. The car had roughly 36k miles and was in beautiful condition inside and out. I bought an aftermarket warranty with the car to cover any unexpected (read expensive) repairs, and spent under $40k.

It will probably take some searching (I looked on and off for 6 or 8 months) to find the right one, but it is out there...

There are lots of reasons to go with a C4S if you are looking at the 996. You get the wider stance (better handling and stability) Turbo breaks and wheels. And my goodness that wide booty looks so nice!!!

The all wheel drive combined with PSM makes this car stick to the road. Guaranteed you will scare yourself at some point in time with how well the car sticks in a corner.

Because a Turbo is a "Turbo". I have a C4s, good buddy of mine has a Turbo, yes we are practically twins (both fairly modded, rims, etc..) .

Other than his car smoking most out there, yes I will lose to some punk *** kid in a V8 type straight line car but dont care..its still a Turbo. Everyone knows Porsche Turbo, ya know...if the turbo name means anything to the owner will have the ***** to back it up. Thats the diff...my car looks fast, very fast as I've been told LOL and thats good enough for me right now.

I've driven both non stock examples, 100BHP is a HUGE difference.
