Convertible top won't open

2000 96 C2 cab. the top has stopped opening. neither the key nor the button will operate the top - no attempt to move, whirring clicking, just does nothing. the key in the door will close the windows if they are down, but wont open them - and wont move the roof at all. the switch does absolutely nothing.

checked fuses, all look ok. checked that engine cover is firmly closed (as top wont open with it open). have tried locking/unlocking car. tried with engine on, and off.

any suggestions on what to do next?
thanks!

Could be a sensor issue or even a relay. I think it's less likely to be a hydraulics failure.

Pull the hand brake up...... does the light indicate the hand brake is applied in the instrument cluster? If not.....its the hand brake switch.
