1999 996 Suggestions needed for New drive chain and seal for intermediate shaft

I have a 1999 C2 in great condition with 99K miles that I have owned for 6 years and it has been a great vehicle. I understood the engine risks when I purchased the car and bought the car at the appropriate price.

I need to have the tooth type chain installed on the intermediate shaft as well as the sealing ring changed from the O-ring to a 4mm wide sealing ring with three sealing lips according to my reputable local repair shop in Dallas,TX and the Porsche service bulletin. I was told by my repair shop the only place that could do this repair is the dealership and it would be over $10K and that Porsche would probably spilt this repair. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to get the car repaired in the Southwest US?

I went to Carmax and they offered me $11K for the car and a local independent dealership offered me $14K towards another car.

Thanks for any suggestions in advance.

For 10K you can probably buy a wrecked car and use it for the parts you need. This way you not only get a motor, but a whole bunch of other goodies (or take the motor and resale it to recoop your loss). This helps if you know someone with a Salvage License.
or
trade in at 14K (plus tax credit) on another car is probably is what I would do. Just think if you spend the 10K for repair then you till have a 100K mile porsche work 14K. If you take the dealerships off you can spend the same 10K, you end up with a nice 02+ w/ a little higher mileage (which plagues off the IMS, in addition to the 3.6) or even a 05+ Boxster.

I will never pay to have an engine split, its either all going to be replaced (motor kit) or I'll take the hit on a new car.

Good luck with the decision. Sorry to hear about the problem.

^+1 - take the money and get a new car - or spend a little more and totally overhaul the engine.

I did overhaul my engine, new rebuild with all updates, for $8.5k including taxes. Year ago. Also, check with suncoast, if I recall correctly, Porsche lowered their rebuilt engines, but I can't remember for sure. Used to be 13k, now less. Good thing then, you got yourself a new engine....

If you want to go in the new engine route, I am sure we can find a reputable place in SW.

Go with the new engine route and look into the X-51 3.6 or 3.8 motor, it has nice power and torque.

Would that be a straight exchange or would the X51 3.8 need electical and other changes?

Tarzancoe- That overhaul cost is more digestable than some of the prices I have read about.
Who did the work for you?
Would you recommend them?
Are you happy with it, a year later?
Also, with that price, does that mean the engine was not in disrepair?
Or was there existing damage?

Sorry for all of the questions, but thanks in advance for your responses.

In spite of your shop's reputation they are way behind in Intermediate shaft bearing knowledge. Checkout LNengineering.com for state of the art solutions to IMS repairs & shops near Dallas to perform the install. If you do want to sell your engine or car I am a prospect.
