Just bought a 996-drove from 700 miles-Today Problems with the Short Shifter-

Update: Turned out to be a fluke for some reason- never did it again *this is 4 months later*

Hey guys, i just finally bought a 2002 996 with 38k from San Fran and drove it back to AZ- 13 hours (will make thread regarding this later)- everything was smooth 100% and smooth shifting, it has a EVO_B&M_SSK Short shifter kit (thats what the work order from Sharkwerks in 2007 says exactly) i noticed today the shifting was very strange, the stick itself seemed hard to put into 3rd and 2nd and now all lower gears as the day went on, like 2nd-4th & 6th seem so hard, and sometimes i can't tell if its in gear or not i'm grinding gears all of a sudden cuz can't put it in gear easily..i'm sure this wasn't happening the past 2 days- seems sticky and clicking when it goes into gear, whats going on? How did this happen in a day? Is this just an adjustment issue and if so, HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO ADJUST and what tools do i need if i do myself (which i doubt i will do)

Its just strange that the last 2 days on the drive it was perfect then all of a sudden today its like this

This happened to me a few months ago with my EVO SSK... If I recall it was a minor adjustment or tightening... I am pretty sure it was minor though. Sorry I can't recall more.

Short shifters can be a bit stiff to move into gear, esp when cold (comes with the territory). The first step is to check the alignment and cables and see if that improves things. Double-clutching and not rushing, with a focus on precise shifts, can also help.

If that doesn't help and you are getting grinding going into gear, check the synchros -- if they are worn it's $000's to go into the transmission and replace them.

The synchros may feel like a shifter problem [the symptom] when the issue is in your transmission instead [the cause]. There may be pallatives like a different transmission fluid or going to a regular shifter with a longer throw (and thus more leverage) that will mitigate the problem for a while, but the synchros will continue to wear and eventually require replacement.

As they say in The Classics, you pay now [for a more expensive, but better well-maintained car] or later [when the fixes have to be done for the bargain buy], tho hopefully not so in your case -- GL!

You do know that EVO is in North Tempe/S. Scottsdale. Those guys would probably love to look at it for you. They're top notch.

shifter cables, this just happened to me. It was a reoccurring event that would show up a couple times until it shut out 2-4-6. Independent just re-adjusted the cables and now everything is all good.

the short throw is going to be a bit stiff. that is perfectly normal. the throw will be shorter also witch sometimes can make it hard to find gears. it just takes some time to get used to.

I was having a problem finding the difference between first and third with the regular shifter. The short shifter corrected my problem, it is notchy. This probably doesn't help you, but fixed my problem, thought it is stiff when cold.
