Mine i felt it acting Wierd in December after i heard a Crunching and Clunk noise come from my Pedal as i was throwing Gears... I believe mine has been broken for a long time. Because today when i picked up my car from the shop with the new Unit in, my Clutch Pedal never Felt so smooth ever before... I have owned my car for alsmost 5 years now and she is 7 years old with 126k. My Pedal now feels like a Brand new car thats in the Porsche Showroom.

This is the Latest Part Number 996-423-081-20, its $49.82 USD at Suncoast or Sonnen Porsche

here is what happend to mine...

Do you have to replace the spring? A big difference?

I just removed my spring yesterday and let me tell you it was not fun being upside down for 30 minutes. I really like the feel of the clutch as it now feels like a real sports car. Unfortunately my pedal vibrates too much (which I think is associated to my early design being a bit different) so I replaced the part with the new Porsche spring 996.423.081.19. Feels like a new clutch was just installed and hey it got rid of the nasty squeak I had.

I know this is an old thread.. but i have a squeaky pedal and when i drive hard and shift quickly.... the pedal does not come all of the way back up.

Can the spring also cause the lack of return?

Yes, the lack of return is exactly what happened in my case. The coils of the parts of the broken spring seem to have been snagging on each other. I was really concerned about the lack of return, that it might not be allowing the clutch to fully engage. So I got that broken spring out of there pronto.

Good luck with yours!

Greg

Helper Spring

+1 That is one of the main symptoms. Main dropped far enough so the speed control would not work because it let the switch attached to the clutch pedal to engage. I replaced the whole unit, didn't feel it was that much more costly and open to less problems. I am all done with standing on my head so I let my tech do it. Took him all of 15 minutes: 5 to squeeze himself in, 5 to replace it and 5 to get back out

thanks for the help guys.. i just took a look under the dash and noticed that the cotter pin on the back of the spring housing was missing. I put one in and now the pedal seems much stiffer... not sure this is even correct.

Is there supposed to be a cotter pin on the back side of the caseing threaded through the exposed metal nipple?

Helper Spring

Hhhmmm! Can't help on the cotter pin, but the Helper Spring should have made it easier to engage the clutch, not stiffer?

You only insert a cotter pin (I used a small, dull nail) when you remove the spring assembly. It holds the whole assembly together and keeps the spring from launching when you remove the assembly from the clutch bracket.

You definitely should not have inserted the cotter pin as that is used only to install the part or remove. Replacing the unit seems impossible at first but you’ll get it done with some patience.
