996 Center Console recovered in leather (ashtray mod also) Pics!

Here are some pics of my center console that I recovered in leather. I tried refinishing with leatherique leather die but wasnt happy with outcome (Though I've used in on leather seats and it worked great!!).

I bought a piece of leather at a local shop ($40) and took the console out, cleaning it carefully and using strongest 3M spray contact glue to attach.

It was actually pretty easy to work with. I've done a lot of vinyl recovering on small projects in the past but leather is so much stretchier that its much easier to use than vinyl. It also smells fantastic and adds that new car smell to my 10 year old car.

If you do this then you need to enlarge the hole for the center console lock. I forgot to do this and had to sand down the lock itself which wasnt a big deal but it'd be better to hog out the hole a 1/16" to make room for the leather. All of pieces fit fine with leather wrapped around edges.

If you wanted to start small and practice then you could remove the small snap on panels and cover them first to get a feel for the process.

Enjoy!

Excellent. I want to do this.

Thanks for the tip about sanding down the lock hole.

Boy, this was a sweet upgrade. Assuming you're still active on this board, how did it wear? Also, were you replacing leather that was already on there that was too beat up, or were you putting leather on the center console where there was none before? I'm full of questions on this one, I think it's just a stellar idea. Hope you're still around!
