Modded C4S or Stock TT?

I'm sure this has been thought of before, but as I think about modding my C4S with suspension, wing, bumper, side skirts, wheels, some interior pieces, it adds up to a small fortune...and I start to think about a TT.....mind you, unless you're going to track the car, which I'm probably not, there's nowhere that you can take advantage of what a TT can do that a C4S can't....so I guess even though people don't want to admit it, it becomes a status/ego thing with a TT.....
but back to my question, what would you guys do, mod a C4S, or have a stock TT if that's all money allows?

Depends on a lot of factors...

Like did you buy your C4S new? If yes, then I would keep it vs buying a used car which is an unknown. If you bought your C4S used, then I think moving up to a used TT is an OK idea(if you can get an extended warranty as the TT when it breaks can be very expensive) and when you start getting itchy for mods you will have defeated the purpose.

Also never expect to get the money out of these cars in the end you put in, so whatever you decide is should be based on the fact that it's your car and you have to drive it.

I was approached with this decision a few months after I bought my new 2003 C2, when a co-worker offered me his 02 TT for about 80k(a great price for a year and a half ago), but to me I bought my C2 new and since it was a daily driver, the reliability of a brand spaking new car that I drove from day one and broke in was the deciding factor, so I passed.

Cheers,
Corey

Mods for the most part will do very little to boost the out of the box performance of the car. You should give a DE a try in your car, it's intoxicating. If you are worried about messing up your car, do the PDE first.

I don't think it becomes a status thing with the TT vs the C4S. I owned a C4 and personally, as much power as it had, I wouldn't have minded a little more. I was very happy with it for a while, but after a couple of years of ownership, I wanted to see what a TT was like. So for me, when I get my next Porsche, it'll be a TT of some sort (993 or 996 probably).

The TT hands down....

Its that much better of a car... And with the availability of relatively in-expensive modifications that yield signifigant horsepower it makes alot more sense.............

No question - not worth modding your C4S. Your car is great as is. The TT's are cheap enough these days (esp. a low-mileage 2001) that if that's what you really want, a trade is in order. I'd hate to mess around w/ a pristine C4S to try to make it something it isn't.

For those of you who say modding the C4S is not worth it, you don't know what you are talking about.

I am faced with that very same question. Not...should I have bought a used Turbo instead of a C4S, but now that I have a C4S, should I modify it or sell it and buy a Turbo?

My decision? Easy, modify the C4S. In June, I will put $20K into my $90K C4S and have a MUCH better performing car than a stock turbo. Better brakes, better suspension and more power. So for a total of $110 K, I will have a MUCH better car than a stock Turbo.

Now, remember, the question. "Should I modify my C4s or buy a STOCK Turbo?"

Now that you have a C4S and are suffering the pangs of depreciation, you can't sell it without taking a significant hit. That must factor in to your decision. Were you to sell the (04) C4S and buy a used (02) Turbo, you would lose a lot of money.

The C4S is EXACTLY the same platform as the TT except the engine and drive train. So when I put on an EVO package of brakes, suspension and supercharger I am going to smoke a stock TT every day; for less money than a brand new stock TT.

Now, I know a modded Turbo will have more POWER than a moded C4S but 470 HP is enough for me, for now. I will have better brakes, better suspension and enough practical power to challenge anyone (including a modded Turbo) to a race on a track. After 450 HP, it will most likely come down to driver skill.

Were I able to start over and make my decision, "Should I buy a slightly used (02-03) Turbo instead of a new C4S?", I would chose the Turbo every time. However, now that I have a C4S, I am going to mod and enjoy it for years to come.

I don't know if I'd go a turbo everytime. Since eveyone who had bought any non TT carrera had to make that decision. Let's face it most C2's or C4s cost new what a TT costs used(depending on year).

I think a lot had to do with your intentions for the vehicle. If a daily driver, I would, as I did buy a new car. If I was strickly going to use it as a track or weekend car, then a used TT is an option for many.

I would spend a little more and buy a GT3. Hands down the best bargain from Porsche today.

Around a track it WILL spank a modded C4S out of the box with proper alignment.

Tal,I see you decided to go for the sc, let me know how it does at the track. I'm doing the x73, x51 route, still concerned about sc reliability at the track. I remember last yr at Watkins Glen, James' sc cut loose with a pretty bad oil leak, worse when you're 5hrs fom home and drive to the track. I actually cancelled an order I had for an sc after that incident. Good luck Capt.

FWIW, I don't think Rlandis is planning a lot of track stuff, with that in mind, why take a bath on the C4S to get a used/abused TT?
