Check Engine Light

When I purchased my 2000 996 (VF supercharger), the dealer told me up front that the check engine light will inevitably come on, and that it was related to the supercharger and other substantial mods, but that it was entirely fine, etc., etc.

That obviously gave me some pause, but it's a reputable dealer, and it passed a pre-purchase inspection with excellent grades and drives wonderfully. And I've just done the 45k service (again, at 51k, as a new buyer, just to be safe). And frankly most German cars I've had love to light up the check engine light seemingly just for fun, and it I suspected this hot rodder would as a matter of course. But the light finally came on today, and I'm less relaxed about it than I thought I would be.

I'm going to have the codes checked in the next couple days, just to see what's what. But I'm curious what others here might have to say about the scenario I've described? Appreciate any input! (that doesn't send me into cardiac arrest ).

EDIT: Forgot to add that a new MAF was just installed, and that I wasn't driving particularly hard when the light came on.

I have installed a LOT of VF kits and have never had any CEL lights come on that weren't from a worn out part such as spark plugs or O2 sensors. Saying the CEL will eventually come on is ridiculous. OF COURSE IT WILL! It will eventually come on without the supercharger kit on as well, lol. Parts wear out, parts fail. Sure, you will have to change spark plugs more often on a FI car, but I think your dealer was a little misleading that the CEL would be an issue with the kit.

CEL's typically come on most often for: MAF sensor, O2 sensor(s), misfires (spark plugs or coil packs). Doesn't matter if it is a supercharged car or not.

Thanks for the feedback, good to know. I'm gonna have it checked out on Monday and I'll report back.

The codes should tell you the whole story. Write down the codes then do some research before you go spend any money, as it could be something very minor.

GOOD LUCK !

Thanks McSworley. I don't suppose there's a cost-effective way to check the codes myself with some gadget? I imagine that, for 2012 models, there's an app for that.
