I might be joining the 996 group!
hey y'all
first i want to say i've spend the past few days reading up on this forum and the wealth of information here is incredible. thanks for educating me!
second, i'm real excited because if all goes well, i'm gonna be a 996 owner soon!
the story behind my purchase is quite interesting...
i brought an older vehicle to a very reputable shop in southern california to get an estimate because even though i moved out to the east coast very recently, i'm looking to keep a car in california for when i visit family... and the folks at the shop gave me a very reasonable estimate.
out of the blues, i asked them how much do they think the car might be worth, and it turns out that the repair cost would be about 1/3 of the car's value... one of the shop owners then said to me, while pointing to a 996 behind my car,
"everyone is trying to sell their cars right now, that 996 has high mileage but is in great condition because i'm the one working on it, and the owner is only looking to get some cash out of it"
i then said to him... "well, if you can find someone to buy my car, i'd buy that 996"
my buddy who introduced me to the shop chimed in and said to the shop owner, "you could use a shop car man"
shop owner said, "i can take your car on a trade and let's make this happen!"
I then went on a test drive of the 996, and it drives very well... asked the shop owner, 'you sure this car is legit?' and he assured me it is...
the rest? is where i'm at right now, haha...
i'm just waiting for him to send over the wiring instructions and i will be flying back to cali to pick up my 996 in a few weeks... freshly serviced by the shop.... since i plan to keep the car in LA, I feel like if I do need anything done, I would at least have a good shop to go to...
my logic is... just to make my old vehicle a daily driver, i'd have to spend 1/3 of what it's worth... and to make it a decent vehicle, i'd have to put in an additional amount that's more than what the car's worth... plus i'll be trading in a manual transmission that nobody else in my family knows how to drive for a tiptronic... my only concern right now is to make sure the IMS doesn't come to haunt me...
i did do the basic diligence... car fax came back relatively clean... car had one accident on file, but immediately after that was sold as a porsche CPO, so i figured damage couldn't be that bad... otherwise clean
oh, and fwiw... if you are saying why didn't you bring it to get a PPI... i'm getting the car from Tom @ Lucent... I think a lot of the LA guys here would have recommended me taking the car to get checked out by him in the first place
anyways... wish me luck!
