Yep that can certainly happen as it goes out the overfill typically pouring onto the hot exhaust or engine below.

Could be the spark plug tubes. My car would be fine at idle but when i would go over like 3-4000 rpm the oil would leak past the seals and shoot on to my exhaust and start smoking.
