Just got my 2001 996 Turbo - please help

Just got my 2001 996 turbo. 5300 miles, 1 owner. I LOVE THIS CAR. It is my 2nd 911 and blows away the C4.

I would really appreciate some advice / help from experienced Porsche owners.

Questions:

1. I live in Chicago. What do you all recommend in terms of snow tires and should I purchase a separate set of wheels to mount the snow tires on? Can I just move the tires on and off as the seasons change?
2. Can anyone recommend a good independent porsche maintenance and repair shop in the downtown Chicago area?
3. Anything I should be looking out for with this car?

Only 5300 miles in 10 years? That car is begging to be driven!

You're best getting separate winter wheels for the tires. Snow tires only come in a 265 max width, which a real stretch for your stock rear rims. People do it, but it greatly increases your chance of bead separation. Dunlop makes a Winter Sport that's wide enough, and there's also the Blizzak. Both are good winter tires.

Can't answer your shop question since I've never lived in Chi town, only visited a lot.

Nothing really to look out for with these cars. They're pretty bulletproof. The rear spoiler hydraulics are known to fail pretty frequently, but with only 5300 miles, they probably haven't been used much so should be pretty good.

I agree with the previous post on the winter tires. I switch mine out (just did over the weekend, in fact) and I drop down to the Porsche recommended 10x18 rear wheels and 265 width winter tires.

I've owned bilizzaks in the past and your proximity to Tire Rack would make them a good choice.

I wish you the very best of luck with all these stupid drivers around here. Another local member recently bought a Porsche and ended up totaling his car last winter. I only drive my beater in the winter, unless this is considered your beater...

Not downtown, but I use Rennology in Oak Forest. I've had nothing but good experiences with them...
