When to install my winters...

Just purchased some winters for my 99C2, and was wondering when anyone puts their winter on. i live in Cleveland and it'll be highs of 47 thursday. I know once it starts looking like it'll be below 40 i'll want them on... just curious.

I don't drive this car too often, 1-3 days per week.

I thought most summer tires are not suppose to go below 55 degree.
We only have a few days a year we have to worry about those issues.
I did drive over some ice a few year ago in summer tires. Not fun but I lived.

i've heard 40 degrees... unfortunately i think all the information is something somebody "heard". I haven't gotten a definitive "don't drive summer tires below X".

Hopefully someone on here has a date that they usually shoot for.

TireRack just says..
It is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

I put mine on last week, but I live in the mountains. I usually put them on around October 15th and take them off around May 15th.

I think the newer winter tires can take a little bit more "warm weather" driving than they used to years ago. You always have some warm days during the fall and spring transitions to and from winter. My 16-year old son drives an Audi Allroad Quattro, and I leave winter tires on that car all year long.

I usually put mine on about the middle of Nov. Same time that my hardtop goes on. You can drive the summer tires when it is colder, but the get pretty hard so you loose a lot of performance. But the first snow fall and they get downright dangerous.

i just put my winter tires on once it snows. as long as you're not driving like a maniac, summer tires are just fine even below freezing tempature. It was -3C today on the way to work and its not like i was spinning out of control.

It's all relative. Summer tires become much harder below freezing temperatures, and they do lose traction even on dry surfaces. If you're driving carefully, it's usually not a big deal. If you're caught out in snow or ice in your summer tires, they perform considerably worse than true winter tires. Again, if you're very careful and drive slowly, you will probably be okay until you get home. In my experience, the difference is quite dramatic. I got caught out in an early snow storm once with Pirelli P-Zeros still on the car. It was a white-knuckle drive home with LOTS of sliding...

In the westside of Cleveland. I put on the snows the very last day I can. If there are 30s in sight then it's time. But I have a Wrangler to drive if I get in a pinch.
