P1524 Anyone know what could it be?

I'm getting 2 different code:

1. Camshaft Adjustment, Bank 2.
2. No triggering of the actuator, active position nevertheless. Potential causes: Short to ground or Actuator faulty.

Sounds like a variocam timing actuator. I had one go bad on my '99 911. Don't let a mechanic charge you a full engine removal and re install. It should only be about a 6-8 hour job for a good mechanic depending on the side.

Unfortunately, these cost over $1000 new but you can find used ones for a lot less, usually around $250. Try www.car-part.com. You'll have to get new plastic chain rails from pelican parts which are super cheap. I actually have 3 used tensioners that I acquired trying to find parts for my car. If you're interested, I can sell you one. I have at least one for each side.

Has anyone done this themselves with out a mechanic? I mean I'm willing to get my hands dirty. I've worked on all my cars.... If I can do it then should be ok.

Yes certainly do-able in your garage.

Much easier to do if you drop the engine, but it is possible (cramped) to replace with the engine still in car.

Spend some time with search on renntech and rennlist and you'll see plenty of write ups.

Agree with logray. I paid a mechanic and he took less than 6 hours. Both can be done with the engine in the car, but one side is easier than the other.

One option is to hire a mechanic on craigslist. I've done this many times and have a great one who only charges $10-20 per hour. He does jobs in half the time I can and he doesn't break other things like I still do. It can be a fun experience to work on your own car with an expert. With the economy as it is, there are usually many out-of-work mechanics looking for extra jobs.

sorry for posting on such an old post but im really in a bind right now.
I have the same p1524 code on my 99 996. I had to replace a head and had to redo the timing on it. Now the only thing is this darn code.....
It runs great on start up and seems to run good until you drive around then when its warmed up at idle it is a little rough then CEL...
I have the durametric scan tool soft ware and I have tested the acutators. They both when activated cause it to run rough until I turn them off. Telling me that they are activated and the solenoid seem to work.
I am getting divation of -3.0 on bank 1 and -20.0 on bank 2. my next step is to change out the cam sensors and see if there is a change of sides. But after that I am a little stuck. Did I screw up the timing on the 2 bank cams? any help would be awesome thanks!

I think you have a camshaft that Is out of position by 180 degrees. It can trick you and look like it is in time when you set the timing with a shaft installed this way. If this is the case, it's probably not great for your car but the porsche will survive. They're amazingly resilient! If I am right, you may be noticing some loud valve rattle during hard acceleration. The idle can still be relatively smooth with a camshaft improperly installed.
