my first Porsche - newbie

I will finally be bringing my baby home from the Lot! Its an 01 911 996 Carrera 4 Cabrio. Its my first ever Porsche and very first convertible car hence I'm so excited though a little scared at the same time. I feel like a teenager again with a new toy :-) we do not have much friendly Porsche owners on this side of the Pond so I joined this forum as well.

Some friends recommended me to take it to the Dealers first and immediately for a diagnostic tests to find out what I might be facing here. I will for sure do that in a week or so because I'd ike to enjoy driving it First! As I said I have never even driven one Yet!

Would anyone have tips on this particular Model? What should I be watchimg out For? Are there tons of DIY'S on this site that can help newbies like Me? Thank you for the privilege to join this wonderful Group! Cheers!

Welcome and the best of luck with your new toy! If you know the history of your car, all the better. If not, I would urge you to have it checked and serviced ASAP. You can avoid many expensive problems by ensuring your car has all the service up to date. Then its fun time with the knowledge that its ready for prime time! By the way, it looks great from the photo. Please put up more when you can.
Cheers

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Thank you for the warm welcome and tips! I will make a deal with the seller to have the car subjected to diagnostics before I drive it home. I will offer to pay for the diagnostics test with the dealers (around $700 USD) just to be sure. Thanks again and we'll post more pictures soon! Cheers!

Welcome! I second the above opinion. Start keeping a detailed service history and find a good porsche shop (preferably not a dealer / pricing) that can give you a run down. If you did not have a PDI done prior to purchase, get one now so you know how your fluids, etc are holding up. They can test the PH of your antifreeze, water % of your brake fluid, brake measurements, tire wear, listen to your engine to see if you have any IMS noises, etc. If I was you, I would change your oil and cut open your filter to make sure you do not have any metal in it. Do you know if the IMS retrofit has been done? If not, keep an eye on your filter and think about at minimum getting a magnetic oil drain plug.

If I was you, and I did in the first week, I would change the oil. There are many oil opinions on this site, but definitely go with a 5W-40 weight and change it at least every 5,000 miles. The oil still may be good at 5K, but you will have the piece of mind to catch any metal, etc and keep your engine at it's best. Many have recommended Castrol, Amsoil, and many other FULL synthetics. Check out this site for some good info on IMS, oils, and other good lower cost upgrades: www.lnengineering.com

You may also want to contact www.blackstone.com or any other oil analysis company to have your oil tested so you know what is going on with your engine.

You will have a blast! Congrats on your purchase.

HOMEY, congrats and welcome (also a P-car noob myself). Pretty sure you're a baller back home

Check out this PPI (PrePurchase Inspection) checklist (P.S. Most PPIs cost around $300 here): http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...immermann.html

Definitely specify during the PPI: RMS (Rear Main Seal), IMS (Intermediate Shaft) and AOS (Air-Oil Separator) , WP (Water Pump). Type 2 revs also. Check the function of the top.
Good read: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...-you-post.html
NOTE: if the dealer gives you a puzzled look when you spout off RMS, IMS, AOS....no bueno

Do not hesitate to contact me via PM here (or email) if you need anything from this side of the pond.

Okay, can someone help me understand above the "type 2 revs"? Thanks, I'm not familiar with that one.

Porsche owners are friendlier than Bimmers and MB owners hahaha! Thanks dudes! Definitely not a baller. Just a regular guy who loves fast cars bro Having trouble with the PPI schedule with the seller. It's kind of a 'different ball game' here when it comes to dealer service because gray market Porsches are charged about 2k USD's when you take them in for PPI or service. This is implemented to discourage Gray imports. Hopefully everything turns out OK. I'm lucky to have all these information available from you guys at "buying stage" before I even take the baby home. If things do not turn out as planned, I might settle for a lower modelled Boxster S or another 996 (not a cabrio )

I hope you won't mind my PM's when I have questions. I'm sure to have several very soon. Thanks again kromdom! Cheers!

definitely a smart (and prudent) move to do all your homework BEFORE buying. Best of luck.

Cut-and-pasted from this thread (post#9): http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...ous-owner.html

PST2/PIWIS interrogation will display the #/type of overrevs. From that, you can infer track useage (since people love to run into the rev limiter on the track....much more so than the street).
