Replacing lifters?
Replacing lifters?
Anyone do this themselves? I know a tool to hold the timing in place would be required, but does the engine have to come out? I'm trying to find some more information. I'm looking to possibly do this in the future.
Thanks

I have done it and can give you some guidance. Yes it can be done with the engine in the car, but it make sit very, very challenging. You have to take off the cam covers and take the cams off and this is difficult with the engine in the car. In putting the cams back in you have to reset the timing, etc. to do all this with the engine in the car you have to take off the muffler brackets along with a lot of other parts and accessories.
With a little experience you can drop the engine in 3-4 hours, same for the reinstall. I think you would spend close to that, and skin a lot of knuckles, trying to do it in the car. And would you do it on a lift, or on jack stands on your back under the car?
Do you have a set of manuals. You really should have some, along with the advice and guidance of others here as the manuals are not great.
Some of the tools can be made, and I have some techniques for setting the timing without all the factory tools. I also have a full set of the tools that I can rent you if that helps. And I can give you some help and sources in finding the lifters at a reasonable price. If you go to the dealer you will pay a fortune.
If you want to go forward let me know and I will post some links to some write-ups on this. Not at my computer right now and don't have all the info on my iPad.
