cosmoline/ wheels off detailing

so, today's the first chance I had to take a wheel off and start some detailing. This is our '99 996 with just over 82k on it. I was just going to paint the center of the rotors with some high temp paint and be done, but I ended up getting a little carried away cleaning. Those exposed rotors look bad once they start corroding, and the insides of the wheels needed a good cleaning.

It looks like the factory soaked the undercarriage in cosmoline for corrosion resistance, what's the recommended method of cleaning it all off and detailing underneath? I just want it to be clean so it will be easier to spot any future issues.

more questions to come, and here's the obligatory "thread is useless without pics" pic

Unless it's a concourse car, and you plan to show it, I would leave the cosmo on...

It is really really really hard to get off once it is baked on, hardened, and 13 years old.

I was doing the same thing over the winter I painted my rotor hats as well as cleaned off the cosmoline on some suspension components, but there is still a bunch on the engine and other various components. I had luck using mineral spirits but it does take quite a bit of elbow grease. I would expect to dedicate at least a whole day to this if you would like to get the car spotless (I have not done this yet)...

brillo pads worked pretty well on the suspension components. The head shields on the rocker covers will probably have to come off to get them really clean. The left rocker cover is getting ready to start dripping, so I need to get in there anyway.
