2000, 996 Cab, Tiptronic, Mounts

Hi Guys/Gals,
This is my first post...I need your help. I have a "thud" off the line. Has to be trans or engine mounts...I don't know which? Suggested self diagnosis? Is this something I want to mess with, or do I need to see my mechanic?
Thanks in advance!

If it's the engine mounts, it's an easy and cheap fix. If it's the transmission mounts, you have very limited options because the rubber mounts for that model year are pressed into the transmission case. I think bad transmission mounts would result in vibration rather than a "thud".

You can check to see if your engine mounts are leaking fluid or look crushed. Do a search here and on Renntech.org for a DIY with photos.

I had a combo of both thud and vibration. engine mount was replaced but still there. For me, the tranny mount was totally shot. Unfortunately tranny has to be dropped to have the mount pressed out and have a new one in. I had my tranny dopped the month before for the AOS so I just didn't want to drop it again. So, I had the mount filled with silicone and it's held up for about 18 months now without any issues. I checked last month and it was still filled/solid. I may have to drop the tranny again in the near future and I'll probably have it replaced properly then.
