These are high reving engines and after proper warm up they shift well between 3,5k and 5,5k, at least my C4S does. Mine runs great around town at 3-4K and when I asked the service manager he said no problem, in fact he mentioned cars not run for long periods i.e. garage queens have RMS problems more so than DD's. He, and several others said "these cars should be driven the way they were built to be driven."
Now on the highway, 6th gear at 70mph.

Nope - I bought her and 48 hrs later the clutch flywheel and rms had to be replaced - while it was apart at Peoria porsche I learned (here) abt the IMS deal. I was already in it for 3400 and sure didn't have an additional 600, but I was going to do anyway since the tranny was off etc. The tech a PP said that it was an aftermarket mod that my car didn't need bc of it being a 3.4 and low miles. Which was fine - I seriously didn't have another 600 dollars. All my cash went into my downpayment - and as it was I was having it repaired w my money for sales tax But like I said - I think that the IMS is a design flaw - and I have heard ppl say - Don't buy a 996 wo high miles (garage queen) and it only affects 3.6 from 00-04. I mean everyone has their theories - I'm an engineer - only on computers tho - but I know my way around the math of it all. Basically - not a smart idea to put a part like the IMS bearing in - something in the system will fail bc of wear and you don't have control over the quality of that "sealed" part - and that bearing would have to be sealed with adamantium not to be compromised bc of heat, oil and vibration. Could be a conspiracy - chances are something won't happen until that warranty is up - but mostly high heat and high miles are going to do the damage eventually - I don't know what they did to test the system under a load - Raby's system will work - but it also won't guarantee that if you get rid of one weak link in the design that you may cause another down the line instead - Just like my fav line from the manual says "The laws of physics still apply" regardless of Porsche did on there end. But I'm car rich and cash poor right now - I'll have to wait until I need to drop that tranny - and so I will def watch that she very well lubed with Mobil 1 and keep and eye on the filter - I could have saved myself the trouble and bought a miata Too bad I'm a Big Block kinda girl - (well, was) not the miata kind - and when I get on it I'm not a moron abt it I'm always amazed people with beautiful exteriors on the vehicles and real pos when you pop the engine compartment.

makes sense - I was just wondering - I'm always in a learning curve w this car

How much are they asking? Did you take it to Porsche purchase inspection for them to do a check on it (about $400)? I did before I bought my 2003 C2 and it was worth it, they found any issues and I was able to get the price down to cover expenses.
+1 on the Dealer inspection - best money you will ever spend!

I'm not a real fan of the dealer inspection. I had the dealer do a PPI for me and I was amazed that they really didn't check anything that would require a ratchet. They checked stuff like - lights, fluid, wipers & hoses. I asked if they had done a compression check and they said: "no". They did what you would expect for a basic safety inspection. You would be better off with a non-dealer mechanic who will actually check mechanical fitness.
