DME Gone Bad

I've been having issues with my 99' C4 randomly not starting lately and after a few days of trouble shooting it myself, I took it to the dealer. They are telling me the DME isn't sending a consistent signal to the starter relay and needs to be replaced. The part alone is over $2,000 from the dealer.

I know these need to be reprogrammed, but does anyone have any experience with a company rebuilding them or a less expensive alternative than buying a whole new unit? Thanks.

I looked into that company that you mail it in for repair, but it was an 800 dollar gamble with no guarantee.

Ended up costing me 3k in all for a new one. Plus the new one got burned up by Porsche's programmer. Ordered another new one. Terrible experience that rings in my mind everytime I think about replacing my Porsche.

I saw this on eBay. It may be something to consider if its the right part number. Check eBay they are on there.

Buy used and get reprogrammed but make sure it is indeed the ecu. I've been surprised hearing about misdiagnosis from many Porsche dealers in the past.

I can recommend this company: http://www.ecudoctors.com/

Authorized Porsche dealer gets Immo and DME codes online from factory with your car's VIN. Reprogramming is then done with PIWIS.

EcuDoctors are confident they can fix the issue and strongly believe it's the immobilizer unit. Anyone else have any experience with them?

No experience with ECU Doc but they advertise in PCA Panorama monthly mag so that indicates some credability. I have never heard of any issues with ECU that wasn't caused by moisture or mishandling.

I went to the ECU doctors website and they will test your ECU and let you know it's issues for only $50. If not good, they credit this toward your swap or repair. Not a bad deal considering some dealers will just want to charge you full boat to replace it and won't send it for repair.
