sticky gears

hi

Ive recently bought my first Porsche, a 996 3.4 c2, I'm delighted with the car and still getting to know it after 2 weeks ownership, however since i bought the car Ive noticed the gears are slightly reluctant to engage cleanly, they always go in for me however my girlfriend really struggles.

things do imporve when warm but the gears do remain "notchy". Ive never owned a Porsche 911 before so not sure if this is normal or if there is a need for adjustment if possible to improve the shift action.

many thanks

For the most part, normal. "Notchy" would be correct. You will find that the shifting becomes smoother as the P-car warms up, and even smoother at higher speeds shifting at higher rpms. Enjoy.

A common mod is to add a short shifter to the Pcar. That makes the shifting much more "notchy", and shorter throws. You will get used to it.

Thanks for the response, I'll just have to drive it a little harder and more often it seems, I'm sure I'll manage that.

Thanks

It could be a simple need for gear oil change. Try that first and see how it goes. There shouldn't be any "struggling" even when cool.

You might be lucky and have a Short Shifter installed ... without you knowing about it. That would explain. Standard OEM Porsche gear shifter is quite smooth and not notchy but it has a REALLY LONG throw!!

I'm with denversteve, might be time for a gear oil change and maybe a clutch adjustment. I have a B&M SSK in mine and it's notchy, but never hard to locate a gear.
