True, however This could be any number of things, my first inclination is a bad oil cooler seal or the oil cooler itself, have it checked when you do the PPI. AOS could be bad as well both are very common in the 996.
Cloud be a bad head gasget (low) but this is rather rare or a small crack in the head, which can be tested for, if it is a crack have it welded and be done.

Good. Look at this point (without the PPI) you don't know, so take it one step at a time.

On the other hand, there are a million other cars that do not have that problem. But, I suggest you figure out why you would settle for a 3.4 liter engine / car and not look at the 3.6 liter engine (2002 and later). Just wondering.

I'm not looking to go into the mid $20s for a 2002. I'm just looking to get my feet wet in the Porsche. I heard good things about the 3.4. I mean everything else checked out fine. I'm getting compensated for the rear tires and am having this oil issue checked out. If it doesn't sound good after the inspection I will walk.

There you go! Once you get to the real issue (which may be nothing at all) you'll be better informed to make the call, at this point everything is pure speculation.

How does the mechanic know the RMS was replaced? Did he remove the transmission(highly doubtful)?

Sounds like a high level inspection based on many assumptions...

Looks like a dead deal. Might be a bad head gasket. Not touching this one. He has an 01 cabrio 6 spd. coming in with 85k on it. Let's see what that one looks like. Keep you guys posted...

If it makes you feel any better I got serious about 3 or 4 different cars (and had inspections on all of them) before I found *the* car.

Good lookin' out, you will find the "right" car, there are a fair amount for sale. I've missed cars that I thought were irreplaceable only to stumble on something even better a few weeks later.
