Not happy about surface rust on exhaust peeking out from under rear. Cover with Stainless color heat paint?

 

Maybe it's time for a nice new titanium exhaust?!

 

That would probably be the most inexpensive way to remedy it. I don't know if they make a high-temp clear coat finish.

Its hard to believe but rustoleum bbq paint... comes in black, white and silver, sold at home depot, drys super fast, and doesnt fume or stink when hot. I have painted entire exhaust systems including headers with this stuff... it works.

 

Just clean it up with fine steel wool or scotchbrite , if you paint it you will have a problem with the paint coming off in the future and that will look worse than it does now.

IMO the best way to go is to have exhaust cleaned/polished to your liking followed by a high temp clear coating. I have heard claims of clear ceramic thermal barrier coatings to retain heat in the exhaust which your engine will love, but have not tried yet.

 

Please explain why you're saying the engine would want to retain heat in the exhaust.

 

Generally anything close to the exhaust, you'd want to retain heat for better exhaust scavenging characteristics and velocity. Hence the reason why a lot of hardcore racer guys heat wrap their headers. On front engine car, the mufflers don't make a big difference because they are located further downstream where the heat has cooled off but on rear engined Porsches where the muffler is very close to the exhaust manifold, there might be some difference there.

 

Less heat disapation from the exhaust keeps the engine cooler & the exhaust gases hotter for faster flow.
