C4Cab (3.4l) Engine choking on a cold rainy day?

Hi all,

Apologies for not doing a proper search before posting this thread. I had this problem happen to me last night. Environment was a heavy rainy evening on a typically cold autumn evening in Tokyo. The car was parked outside on the side street.

My wife, newborn & I drove out from our home to the restaurant only about 1km away, so it's hardly a warm up and was left parked for about 2 hrs before returning. Overall I'd say the car wasn't really warmed up but I did use the car extensively the day before (maybe around 60km??).

Upon returning from dinner we started the car and drove off and I felt the car was jerky like it was choking especially when accelerating in gear (Tokyo so I wouldn't really get past 2nd gear much). The feeling was like we were driving on corrugated road, where the engine felt like it was struggling.

Today is a fine clear day and just now I thought I'd give it a test and if it were still a problem, try to drive to Porsche service. However a quick drive around the block, it all felt fine.

I'm curious what could have caused the experience I had? I've had my Porsche for about 9 years, it's got about 66000+ km mileage on it. Had past clutch problems but clutch assembly/wheel was replaced 2 years ago.

Was it just a cold weather and I didn't let the car warm up enough? I've definitely driven this car through a snowy day before in Tokyo and even on such colder dry snaps, I didn't encounter such a problem. Could rain have leaked in somewhere?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I'm going to give this a wack. Sounds like there was some water that got into the air intake possibly.
But here is a question, did you fill it up with gas the day before because the symptoms sound alot like water in the gas.
Water could have gotten on hte coils as well, this is where I would start.
Don't idle warm her just drive her below 3k rpm's and make clean deliberate shifts.

I would go with a coil pack crack. Water in the gas wouldn't solve itself and it's almost impossible to get water in the air intake unless it's modified and open. Coil pack cracks can short out/arc with water around them. Look for an electrical issue.

@FLA996TT & @denversteve,

Cheers for your response. Actually I did just fill the car up with gas the day before! I did have a good drive around with it on that day though after filling it with gas (that 60km drive). My car mechanically is stock except for a few unrelated add-ons years ago which is (should be) completely unrelated.

I drove it another 12-14km today after my post and so far it's been ok. I'll get the garage to check out the coil pack cracks. Cheers chaps.

First off, this is not needed as this is what this forum is for; "Apologies for not doing a proper search before posting this thread."
We are all glad to help!
Well, did you get the "dreaded" CEL? If not I would suspect something other than a coil pack. At this point if she is driving good, and, no CEL, I would wait and see.

Ive had that happen to me after that car sat in some rain. My filter did get water on it (k&n w/ a aem dry filter) It would do it for a few minutes, but then would go away when it dried off.

Cold & rain = maximum density air mass, so maybe your MAF sensor is marginal. If it does this again try disconnecting MAF wire lead & driving, if it drives better disconnected, replace MAF.

Oh dear. I sure hope the MAF isn't bad. Anything to do with Porsche Japan is ridiculously expensive. I had my MAF changed probably 2 years ago and it's about 3x the cost of Porsche service in US or UK.

This was one of the reasons why I usually consult this forum first before even thinking of driving my car into the garage.
